Skyhawks Drop Two in Texas Despite Offensive Improvements

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Fort Lewis College softball team dropped its final two games of the Lubbock Sports College Invitation on Saturday, falling to Oklahoma Baptist University and Lubbock Christian University by scores of 12-2 and 16-8, respectively.

Game One: Fort Lewis 2, Oklahoma Baptist 12
A leadoff triple from OBU came across to score in the opening frame, followed by an unearned run to see the Skyhawks down 2-0 after one inning of play. The Bison doubled up the lead in the second inning, plating two runs courtesy of a blistering double to right-center before a strikeout from freshman Amiee Shanks closed out the top of the frame. The Skyhawks got the bats going in the bottom of the inning, kicked off by a single up the middle from redshirt freshman Madyson Devers. Sophomore Cat Rodman followed that up with a single of her own, seeing runners on first and second with two outs. Senior Taylor Beaman drew a walk to load them up, but the OBU secured a strikeout to end the threat.

Sensing an approaching Skyhawk group, the Bison acted quickly to take a 9-0 lead in the top of the third. OBU racked up three hits, one double, and two singles while taking advantage of a Fort Lewis error to take the commanding lead. The Bison added another pair of runs in the fourth, this time off a 2 RBI triple to see the Skyhawks down 11-0. Another run would come in the fifth courtesy of a double to left-center, finding Fort Lewis in run-rule territory with three outs to work with.

Freshman Alex Tenorio got things started with a leadoff triple to right field on the first pitch of her at-bat. Breanna Baca followed with an infield single and advanced to second on a stolen base to set two runners in scoring position. Both runners would touch home after junior Sydney Stewart challenged the opposing shortstop and forced an error. Despite the late push, the Bison picked up another strikeout to end things in a 12-2 final score.

Statistical Leaders:
Alex Tenorio: 2-of-3, 1 3B, 1 run
Breanna Baca: 1-of-3, 1 run, 1 SB
Cat Rodman: 2 RBI
Amiee Shanks: 2.0 IP, 4 ER, 4 hits, 3 K

Game Two: Fort Lewis 8, Lubbock Christian 16
The second game of the day had an entirely different flavor to it, with big bats and energetic celebrations coming from both dugouts throughout. Fort Lewis struck first, taking advantage of an early fielding error to push a run across on a Baca single. Another run came across after a wild pitch allowed all runners to advance. Tenorio would then single to second base, allowing two baserunners to come home after a throwing error. Tenorio found herself called out trying to stretch to second, but the lead stood at 4-0 after two innings.

The offense continued to pour out, this time in the top of the third when another LCU fielding error plated both Rodman and Devers who found their way on base via a walk and double, respectively. The lead sat at 6-0 heading into the bottom of the third, but LCU's scoreless outing wouldn't last for long. A pair of singles, including one that stretched all the way to home plate after a fielding error, found the score at 6-2 after three innings. Tenorio got things going again, this time in the fourth inning with a double down the left-field line. The lead increased to 8-2 moments later when Rodman belted the first long ball of the season over the left-field fence. LCU managed to pick up a pair of outs down the stretch to get out of further trouble.

The Lady Chaps responded with a homer of their own, followed by a bases-loaded walk to bring the score to 8-4 in favor of Fort Lewis. The bottom of the fifth inning is when LCU did the most damage, plating 10 runs on seven hits while leaving two on base. Runs came via back-to-back home runs, a triple, a double, and a pair of singles to find the Skyhawks down 14-8. Two more runs came across in the bottom of the sixth frame, this time on a dropped fly ball, closing things out in a 16-8 score. Despite the final score, the Skyhawks showed vast improvements throughout the game, flashing the offense with power and gap to gap capability that will continue to develop as the season progresses.
