Skyhawks Softball Falls on Day One of WTAMU Invitational

Box Score CANYON, Texas – The Fort Lewis College softball team faced stout pitching and shut-down defense on day one of the WTAMU Invitational on Friday, falling to both Texas A&M University-Commerce and No. 5 West Texas A&M University.

Game One: Texas A&M University-Commerce 10, Fort Lewis 0
The Lions got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning behind gap to gap swings to bring runners around, and the Skyhawks went down quietly to hold things at a two-run game. Commerce added another run in the second inning, but a sprawling grab from freshman Hannah Rutherford in right field closed it out without further damage. As the game moved into the fourth inning, the Skyhawks began to put the ball in play with more success, but the team still found itself in search of its first hit of the afternoon.

Commerce exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth inning, capped off by a huge homerun to right field, to extend the lead to 9-0 and bring on a Fort Lewis pitching change. The Lions added one more run before freshman pitcher Amiee Shanks caught a batter looking for the third out of the inning. Fort Lewis was unable to muster a comeback, going down in order to close out the game in a 10-0 final score.

The Lady Buffs got on the board when a leadoff triple came around to score, followed by an RBI single up the middle for a 2-0 score after one inning of play. The Skyhawks had junior Sydney Stewart aboard courtesy of a walk, but a pair of fielder's choice plays, and a strikeout got WTU out of the inning unscathed. WTU doubled the lead with a two-run homer over the center field fence for a 4-0 score. A sac fly pushed another run across before a ground out ended the inning.

The Lady Buffs had their most productive outing in the fourth inning, tacking on five runs before an inning-ending double play from sophomore Cat Rodman closed out a bases loaded threat. In the bottom of the fifth, junior Jaden Blaise Redus picked up a leadoff single down the right field line and was advanced 60 feet via a groundout. Blaise Redus found her way to third base by way of another groundout, but a swinging strikeout ended the game in a 9-0 score.
