ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team fell in the final moments, dropping a 58-56 road contest to Adams State University on Friday night. Fort Lewis dips to 2-22 overall and 1-17 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Adams State improves to 11-13 on the year and 9-10 in the league.

Fort Lewis shot 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the field compared to 36.8 percent (21-of-57) for Adams State. Both teams made five shots from beyond the arc and were nearly even from the charity stripe. The Skyhawks outrebounded the Grizzlies 36-29 for the night while turnovers favored Adams State.

Redshirt senior Sydney Candelaria led the team with 25 points, going 8-8 from the charity stripe. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson followed with a double-double, chipping in 10 points and 12 rebounds. Redshirt junior Alyssa Adams had eight points and four rebounds.

Redshirt freshman Jana Conejero connected on a three-pointer, assisted by Candelaria, to put the Skyhawks ahead 5-0 two minutes into play. Turnovers plagued the Grizzlies early, allowing for extra possessions as Fort Lewis extended the lead to 9-0. Adams State would collect itself down the stretch, scoring nine unanswered points to tie the score with under three minutes to play. The teams would then trade free throws to make it 11-11 before a layup gave the Grizzlies their first lead of the night at 13-11. Candelaria countered with a pair of free throws of her own to tie the score yet again, but a late jumper saw Adams State ahead 15-13 at the buzzer.

The Grizzlies carried the lead into the early portion of the second quarter, going up 20-15 with 7:21 on the clock. The scoring run continued with a midrange Adams State jumper forcing a Fort Lewis timeout with the score sitting at 24-15. The Grizzlies added on another score before a driving layup from Alyssa Adams brought the score to 26-17 with just over five minutes to go. The points continued to pour on for the Skyhawks with a Candelaria layup narrowing the deficit at 26-21 with two minutes to play in the half. The teams traded points down the stretch with the score at 30-23 in favor of Adams State at halftime.

Sorenson and Candelaria combined for four points to open the third quarter with the score moving to 32-27 in favor of the home squad. Sorenson found success again, this time at the 6:36 mark to cut the Grizzly lead to 32-29. Conjero added a corner three of her own to knot the score at 32's as the teams headed into a media timeout. The following three minutes saw the Grizzlies go up 39-34, capped off by a driving layup with just over one minute to go in the quarter. Adams State drilled a deep three at the buzzer to carry a 45-37 lead into the final quarter of play.

Alyssa Adams kept the three-point shooting trend going in the fourth quarter, making a shot of her own to pull the Skyhawks within five. The Grizzlies extended the lead from there, benefitting from Fort Lewis turnovers to go ahead 50-42 with seven minutes on the clock. Adams State continued to pull away late in the game, dropping in a layup for a 54-43 score with 5:20 on the clock.

In the ensuing possession, Adams State came away with an offensive rebound and was fouled in the process.
