Skyhawks Fall to ThunderWolves in Road Contest

Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team fell to CSU Pueblo in its final road game of the season, dropping a 69-52 contest on Saturday night. Fort Lewis dips to 2-23 overall and 1-18 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while CSU Pueblo improves to 20-6 overall, 15-5 RMAC.

Fort Lewis shot 25 percent (16-of-64) from the field and 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from three compared to 38.5 percent (12-of-34) from the field and 22.6 percent (7-of-31) from three for CSU Pueblo. The teams were deadlocked at 45 rebounds apiece while the ThunderWolves benefited from 12 blocks. Redshirt senior Sydney Candelaria and redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson each chipped in 15 points to lead the team. The duo led the way on the defensive side of things with 17 combined rebounds.

The opening minutes saw the teams trading points with the score sitting at 4-4 after a layup from redshirt junior Alyssa Adams layup. Defensive remained the dominating force early one with a pair of Candelaria free throws bringing the score to 7-4 with 5:24 to go. The free throws sparked an offensive burst with both sides finding success for a 10-6 Skyhawk lead. The Pack reached double digits with a layup, cutting the FLC lead to 14-10 with just over a minute to go. The Skyhawks were held scoreless over the last 3:16 of the quarter to hold the score at 14-10 heading into the second quarter.

Sorenson chipped in three points to open the quarter, but the Pack continued to remain hot on the heels of the Skyhawks with the score at 16-15. The home squad finally managed to tie the game up at 17-17 with the Skyhawks on another scoreless streak. Sorenson would then drop in a put-back layup to flip the lead back in favor of the blue and gold with six minutes to go. CSU Pueblo broke its scoring drought with a driving layup to take a narrow 22-21 lead with 3:48 on the clock. From there, the Pack roared ahead on a 10-0 scoring run to carry a 32-24 lead into the break.

Defense kept both teams at bay at the beginning of the third quarter with a CSU Pueblo three-point play moving the score to 40-25 with 6:33 remaining in the quarter. The Skyhawks found their first bucket of the second half at the 4:52 mark courtesy of a Sorenson layup to see Fort Lewis down 15 points. The Pack continued to extend the lead, this time with a three-pointer to move the score to 49-29 with three minutes to go. The Skyhawks got a three from Candelaria, assisted by Adams, to send the teams into the final quarter with a score of 49-34.

While the previous quarters featured strong defensive pursuits, the first minutes of the fourth quarter was a scoring frenzy as the score stood at 56-37 in favor of the Pack. The Skyhawks went on an eight-point scoring run to pull within 11 points as the clock ticked under five minutes. Redshirt freshman Iva Drobnjak extended the scoring run with a three-pointer, pulling her team within eight with three minutes to go. The Pack finally found a score, for the first time in nearly five minutes, to restore order with the lead drifting to 61-50. From there, the Pack locked down on defense and ran away with a 69-52 win.

Fort Lewis (2-23, 1-18 RMAC) will be back home on Thursday for a conference showdown with Westminster College. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside of Whalen Gymnasium.
