Fort Lewis College Softball Loses a Pair on Day Two of WTAMU Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – The Fort Lewis College softball team fell to a pair of Lone Star Conference foes on day two of the WTAMU Invitational, falling to 0-8 on the year despite offensive improvements.

Game One: Texas Permian Basin 6, Fort Lewis 4
The Skyhawk got on top early with Alex Tenorio leading things off with a double to left-center. The freshman made it all the way home two batters later courtesy of a Sydney Stewart double. A line out ended the threat, but the lead stood at 1-0 after an inning of play. Hailie Mann worked efficiently through the first two innings, striking out one while allowing her defense to shine behind her. Beyond her work in the circle, Mann led the third inning off with a laser shot to centerfield for her first double of the season. Tenorio followed with a triple to right-center to score Mann for a 2-0 lead. Permian Basin would then change pitchers, but the switch didn't phase Faith Sgro who dropped down an RBI groundout. The Falcons got out of trouble by gloving a liner down the third-base line as the lead moved to 3-0 after three.

Extra base hits continued to pour on for the Skyhawks, this time with a Cat Rodman double that found just enough space down the left-field line to score Hannah Rutherford from first base. The Falcons got one back in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI groundout to shortstop. The scoring continued in the home half of the inning, this time with a gapper to left-center that scored a pair. Before the Skyhawks had a chance to regroup, the Falcons found the equalizer with a liner to right field. Fort Lewis made a pitching change, calling for Rodman to get the final out, and it paid off with a swinging strikeout to end the inning.

The Falcons took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth, scoring one on a wild pitch then plating a second with a shot to left field. An eventual ground ball out got Fort Lewis out of the inning, but not before Permian Basin shot ahead 6-4 after five innings of play. The score remained at 6-4 heading to the seventh inning behind a solid relief outing from freshman pitcher Amiee Shanks. Shanks carried her confidence over into her following at-bat, singling to left field, but a liner into a double play ended the comeback attempt in 6-4 fashion.

Game Two: #5 West Texas A&M 25, Fort Lewis 3
The Lady Buffs pulled ahead in the top of the first, scoring the go-ahead on a passed ball. The runs poured on from there as the home squad took advantage of throwing miscues and launched a homer for a 4-0 lead. It was all WTU from there as the fifth-ranked team tallied a total of 14 runs on 12 hits (six for extra bases) and two Skyhawks errors. Alex Tenorio picked up right where she left off in game one, sending a leadoff double down the right-field line for her third extra-base hit of the day. Madyson Devers brought her around with a well-placed shot to left field, seeing the score at 14-1 after one inning.

Two home runs in the top of the third inning continued to propel the Lady Buffs forward, extending the lead to 17-1 before a line out could end the inning. Tenorio countered in her turn at the plate, singling for her second hit of the day, but the freshman was stranded to hold the score stagnant. WTU continued to provide offensive power, though, tacking on another six runs on five hits in the fourth inning to build the lead to a commanding 24-1 advantage. Fort Lewis got two runs back in the bottom of the frame on two hits, including a triple from Jadyn Gilley, before a strikeout ended the inning. WTU earned another run in the top of the fifth, but that would do it for the home team as the Skyhawks headed to the plate for the final time. It would be Tenorio again, picking up her third hit of the game, this time a triple to right-center to keep hopes alive. A pair of groundouts followed by a strikeout eliminated the scoring opportunity as the Skyhawks fell in five innings.
