Skyhawks Fall to Cougars, Look Ahead to First Home Games of the Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team fell in its final two games versus Colorado Christian University on Monday afternoon, falling to 0-13 on the year and 0-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Game One: Colorado Christian 12, Fort Lewis 4
The Cougars got ahead in the bottom of the first inning, stringing together a single and two walks to set up a big home run for a 4-0 advantage. The Skyhawks put bat on ball in the top of the second, but a line out and deep fly ball to center field held the visitors hitless. Colorado Christian continued to find success in the batter's box, benefiting from extra-base hits to double the lead at 8-0 after two.

Hannah Rutherford kicked off the third inning with a single up the middle and moved into scoring position on a stolen base. Breanna Baca advanced the runner on a groundout, but defensive efforts eliminated the threat to hold Fort Lewis scoreless. Another four-run inning came for the Cougars in the third, pounding two homers out of the park to find the Skyhawks down 12-0.

The bats finally broke through in the top of the fourth, kicked off by a two-out single from Sydney Stewart. Cat Rodman followed with a double down the line to score Stewart from second. Jaden Gilley and Rutherford followed with RBI hits to bring the score to 12-3 in favor of the home team. The Skyhawks earned another run in the top of the fifth, this time on a solo homerun from Alex Tenorio, but a pair of outs ended the game in a 12-4 score.

Game Two: Colorado Christian 8, Fort Lewis 0
The long ball continued to benefit the Cougars in game two as the team picked up two three-run blasts to go ahead 6-0 after two innings. Another home run, this time a two-run shot to left field, extended the lead to 8-0 after three. Gilley picked up a single in the fourth, but the threat was eliminated via a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. The Skyhawks put three balls in play in the top of the fifth with all three finding the gloves of the opposing fielders on line-outs to end the game.

Fort Lewis (0-13, 0-4 RMAC) will play its first home games of the season this weekend, welcoming Adams State University to Aspen Field for a four-game series. Action begins on Saturday with games scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
