Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Skyhawks Fall to Mavericks, Look Ahead to First Home Game of the Season

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team wrapped up the weekend away with a 15-4 loss to Colorado Mesa University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Fort Lewis drops to 1-1 overall while CMU improves to an unbeaten 2-0 on the early year.

The Mavericks edged out the Skyhawks in shots, 34-11, and shots on goal 24-8 while holding the Skyhawks scoreless in two-quarters of play. Sophomore Haley Dostie led the team with two goals on two-shot on-goal attempts, while sophomore Caprietta Abbadessa and freshman Mikki Brown followed with one goal apiece. Junior Liv Crawford dished out two assists to lead the Skyhawks. Redshirt sophomore Rebecca Kiyokawa led the group with four caused turnovers and four groundballs. Junior Averi Basso had nine saves between the pipes.

Fort Lewis found its first goal of the day off an Abbadessa shot, cutting the Maverick lead in half with 9:54 remaining in the first quarter. Crawford assisted on her second goal of the quarter just one minute later, finding Dostie for the equalizer at 2-2. CMU responded with two-straight goals, doubling up the lead before another Dostie shot rifled past the keeper for a 4-3 score after one period of play.

The Mavericks had enough of the closely-contested matchup, scoring three unanswered goals in the second quarter to charge ahead 7-3. Basso continued to hold her own between the pipes, handling an onslaught of attempts to keep her team within range.

Brown pulled the Skyhawks closer with 4:27 to go in the third quarter, netting the first goal of her Skyhawks career to bring the score to 8-4. Two additional goals poured in for the home squad to close out the third quarter at 10-4 in favor of the Mavericks. CMU's defense held the Skyhawks without a goal in the final quarter of play, while the offensive units tacked on another five goals for a 15-4 final score from Community Hospital Unity Field.

Fort Lewis (1-1, 1-1 RMAC) will play its first home game of the season on Sunday, March 13 when the team plays host to McKendree University for a non-conference matchup. Action picks up at 1:00 p.m. at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

"We are super excited to play at home after a hard road swing weekend," said head coach Ashley Travis. "It will be fun and exciting to play in front of our home crowd. It's going to be fun to play a nonconference opponent for the first time in two years this upcoming Sunday."
