Skyhawks Compete in Two-Day Maverick Open

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – For the second time this spring, the Fort Lewis College men's and women's track teams headed to Colorado Mesa University for the Maverick Open. Competition began on Friday and concluded on Saturday afternoon in Grand Junction.

Day One
Brady Burrough and Travis Kearney had good showings in the 800m race, coming in fifth and sixth respectively with times of 2:00.81 and 2:02.09. Leading the Skyhawks in the 1500m race was Aaron Busche, coming in 12th place with a time of 4:16.37. Cody Speece led the team in the 10K race, finishing in second place with a time of 34:38.27.

The women's team was represented in the 800m race by a handful of athletes. Leading the pack was Saylor Sargent with a time of 2:15.70—good for fourth place. Following closely behind was Katie Fankhouser was 2:15.77. Carmella Wright (5:11.80) and Sophia Mena (5:12.24) led the blue and gold in the 1500m race with sixth and seventh place finishes, respectively. The 10K race was completed by Taylor Murphy who clicked a time of 45:45.22 for a fifth-place finish. Rounding out day one competition for the women was Krista Benze 's fourth-place effort in the 400m hurdles (1:05.89).

Day Two
The men's team shined on day two of competition, first in the 5000m race where Steven Nez crossed the line in third place with a time of 15:29.30. Closely behind was Cebastian Marquez who finished in 15:32.51 for a fourth-place effort. Ricky Trejo was the team's third top-ten finisher, coming in ninth place with a time of 15:49.11. In the 3000m steeplechase, Kiddo Gaorekwe came in fourth place with a time of 10:04.87 to lead the team. Max Robinson and Braedon Sittman followed in fifth and sixth place with times of 10:11.21 and 10:14.58.

The women's team competed in the 5000m race on day two, led by a fifth-place finish from Angel Curley (19:03.41). Following Curley was Katie Fankhouser with a time of 19:13.71—good for seventh place. Carmella Wright led the team in the 3000m steeplechase, coming in fourth with a time of 12:02.88. Peyton Burnside followed in 11th place with a time of 13:39.48.

Fort Lewis will head to the University of New Mexico for the Don Kirby Tailwind meet on Thursday, April 21.
