Skyhawks earn first home win, top Mountaineers 3-1 in RMAC play

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team earned its first home win of the season on Tuesday night, claiming a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match over Western Colorado University, 3-1. Fort Lewis improves to 4-5 on the year and 2-1 in league play while Western dips to 2-8, 1-2 RMAC.

"Winning in front of our home crowd is always fun, and our fans got to see our resilience tonight in the comeback effort," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite.

The Skyhawks edged out the Mountaineers in hitting efficiency at .184, but the teams were relatively even throughout the remainder of the stat chart. Each side totaled 55 digs while combining for seven aces and 11 blocks.

Fans within Whalen Gymnasium were treated to a standout performance from sophomore Alexis Hobie who tallied her second double-double of the season at 14 kills (.429) and 14 digs to tie a career-high.

"I was really happy to see Alexis come through for us every time we needed her tonight," credited Tarnauskaite. "We can always count on her to show up with power in the front row, but she also contributed in a big way on defense and in serve receive. She competed as a true all-around player tonight."

Junior Lauren Shea had a standout performance on the right side with a career-high 13 kills (.375) to go along with five digs, three blocks, and an ace. Senior Kamryn Lopez had 11 digs in the win and dished out four assists at the libero position. Sophomore Natalia Lambos coordinated the offense with 29 assists and nine digs.

Set One (17-25)
The visiting Mountaineers quickly got ahead with a 10-4 advantage thanks to a pair of services aces and offensive woes on the side of the Skyhawks. Fort Lewis used a 5-1 scoring run to make it a 19-16 score, earning kills from Hobie and a block from freshman Ella Butler, but Western closed it out on a 6-1 run to take the opener. The Mountaineers hit a match-best .265 in the opener compared to a .118 mark for the Skyhawks.

Set Two (25-15)
The second set began similarly to the first with Western taking an early lead. Fort Lewis would turn the tides, though, enjoying a six-point run to double the lead at 8-4. Each effort from the visiting squad was met with a hasty side out to keep the set out of the reach. Hobie hammered a kill to get Fort Lewis to 20 points, and three-straight kills off the hand of junior JJ Curry ended it in favor of the blue and gold.

Set Three (25-19)
The teams saw ties at three, four, and five before a clutch run had Fort Lewis comfortably ahead. The Skyhawks continued to take advantage of hitting errors from the Mountaineers who hit just .143 for the set to go up 18-10. Western made a late push courtesy of back-to-back blocks on Curry to see a 23-19 deficit, but a kill from Shea would give Fort Lewis a 2-1 edge.

Set Four (25-20)
The Mountaineers picked up the set's first two points, but a 7-1 Skyhawks run pulled the score to 7-3. Western held within a pair of points as the set moved into double-digit points, but quick side outs allowed the home squad to stay ahead. Sophomore Chay Swenson came up big as a late sub, earning a fearless kill on the pin the hold her head ahead by five. The teams went point to point down the stretch as a Western kill had the score at 24-20, but another swing that trailed wide ended the match in favor of Fort Lewis.

Up Next
Fort Lewis (4-5, 2-1 RMAC) will remain home for a Friday evening slate versus No. 20 Regis University (6-4, 2-0 RMAC).

The Rangers have emerged as a dark horse to claim the conference crown this season, making a statement in the RMAC opener with a sweep over No. 15 Mines. Regis is 6-4 this season with losses to No. 3 Western Washington and No. 12 West Texas A&M adding blemishes to the scorecard. On the flip side, the team has earned convincing wins over No. 11 Central Missouri, No. 5 West Florida, and No. 10 Northwest Missouri.
