Women's soccer falls to CSU Pueblo in RMAC opener

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Pack netted the go-ahead goal in the 33rd minute and shut out the Skyhawks' offense en route to a 1-0 final score in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener on Friday evening.

Fort Lewis falls to 1-5-1 overall and 0-1 in the RMAC while CSU Pueblo improves to 2-5 on the year and 1-0 in league play.

"As a team, we were disappointed with the first half. We forced some turnovers really early in good places and didn't have the nerve to make out opponents play," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We responded well to the situation in the second half. The team forced a good performance out of the opposing goalkeeper, hitting the crossbar and forcing a goal line save in the final minute of play."

CSU Pueblo held a 10-7 edge in shots for the match, including a slight 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore McKenna Ford led the team with two shots, one on goal. The team's additional shots on target came from freshman Clara Tallent and sophomores Julia Johnson and Aubrey Swindle. Junior Katie Dunbabin and sophomore Riley Bravin each picked up two saves in goal.

"Aubrey came out and really ignited us tonight," noted Clarke. "She was really dangerous and we saw wonderful pressing from her."

CSU Pueblo sent that game's first shot on goal in the 15th minute, prompting a save from Dunbabin who started the contest in goal. Fort Lewis responded with a trio of shots over the next 15 minutes of play, but each would trail just wide of goal to hold the match at zeros. The Pack broke through in the 34th minute with a goal from Porsche Nieto to see the score at 1-0. Swindle sent the first shot on target for the Skyhawks in the 38th minute, and Johnson immediately followed on the rebound, but a pair of saves held the blue and gold off the scoreboard.

Tallent would see the Skyhawks' final prime opportunity of the contest, this one in the 74th minute, but a save top right from Breanna Encinas in goal erased the threat. The Pack earned one more shot down the stretch while holding the Skyhawks at bay to run the clock out on a 1-0 shutout.

Fort Lewis (1-5-1, 0-1 RMAC) will resume conference play on Sunday at (RV) UCCS (4-1-2). Game time is slated for 2:30 p.m. from Mountain Lion Stadium in Colorado Springs. The Mountain Lions opened conference play with a decisive 6-0 win over Western Colorado on Thursday.
