Mountain lions blank Skyhawks 3-0 in Sunday slate

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team closed out the road trip on Sunday with a 3-0 loss to (RV) UCCS at Mountain Lion stadium. Fort Lewis drops to 1-6-1 overall and 0-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while UCCS improves to 5-1-2, 2-0 RMAC.

"I know that the team is tired of learning through loss and so is the coaching staff," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We really are growing, and when we look at the first half we matched UCCS in shots and hit the crossbar. We found out a lot about some more of our young players today."

UCCS finished the game with a 17-7 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. The Mountain Lions benefitted from seven corners compared to two for the Skyhawks. Junior Mckenna Thompson led the team with three shots, two of which were on frame. Freshman Tristan Hanrath followed with a pair of shots in 33 minutes of play. Katlyn Rosenbaum allowed one goal while making four saves in the second half.

"I feel that we've found another lockdown defender in Cecilia Marlowe, and we had some veterans help stabilize us after giving up the first two goals. This team is going to be good at the end, and patience is a must. The attitude and commitment from the players is awesome to see," noted Clarke.

The Mountain Lions quickly got ahead by a 2-0 score after just 12 minutes of play thanks to a pair of goals from Fabiola Estrada, adding the game's second goal off a set piece opportunity. UCCS saw another prime one-on-one opportunity in the 25th minute when a long pass found the foot of a Mountain Lion player. Dunbabin erased the potential for a three-goal deficit, though, charging the opposing attacker and knocking the ball wide to hold the score at 2-0.

Thompson had the team's first good look of the contest, tearing down field and sending a shot upper left. A great read from Alexis Walker in goal pushed the ball toward the post to preserve the two-goal advantage. Hanrath had the team's final look in the opening half, sending a shot high center into the arms of the keeper to hold the score heading into the half.
Despite the goal differential, the shots and shots on goal marks were even at the half. Each side put up four shots with two making their way on target. Hanrath and Thompson combined for the team's pair of shots on goal through the half.

UCCS turned up the heat in the second half and netted their third goal of the outing in the 53rd minute. Despite racking up shots and pressuring the Skyhawks' defense, Rosenbaum kept her cool between the pipes and made three saves through the midway point of the second half. Hanrath and Thompson picked up shots down the stretch, but the Mountain Lion defense held strong as time expired on a 3-0 shutout.
