David and Yake score first career goals, Skyhawks dominate in 3-1 win over Cowgirls

DURANGO, Colo. –  A trio of Skyhawks picked up goals, including career-firsts for sophomore Elizabeth David and freshman Dannon Yake, as the women's soccer team earned a dominant 3-1 win over New Mexico Highlands University on Friday evening.

Fort Lewis improves to 2-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while NMHU falls to 0-7 on the year and 0-3 in league play.

"When you've had a season that has lacked scoring so far, it feels nice to get three up on the board," said head coach Damian Clarke. "There was fantastic composure from our returners, but our young players did good things tonight. It has taken time to figure out what our lineup would be, but I'm really happy with the play from players like Rachel Peebles who plays a unique style of soccer."

The Skyhawks dominated the majority of play, racking up 21 shots and 14 shots on goal versus eight shots (seven on goal) for the Cowgirls. Junior Madyson Barela scored the first goal of the outing for Fort Lewis, her first of the season and 10th of her career. David led the team with three points with an assist on the game-tying goal. Sophomore Aubrey Swindle placed three shots on goal to pace the team, narrowly missing out on her first goal of the season by hitting the crossbar in the first half. Junior Katie Dunbabin and sophomore Riley Bravin combined for five saves.

The visiting Cowgirls got ahead 1-0 in the eighth minute when a free kick sent a flurry of players toward the box. NMHU's Jenny Mueller connected with a dribbling bounce and chipped one just over the head of Dunbabin for her first goal of the season. The Skyhawks responded quickly, though, as David dished a pass 60 yards ahead to an open Barela. The veteran Skyhawk gathered and sidestepped the keeper who was attempting to narrow the angle, finding an open net for the equalizer. Despite an onslaught of pressure from the Fort Lewis offense, the score held at 1-1 heading into the half.

"That first goal of the night showed a lot of composure and great timing on the run from Barela," recognized Clarke. "In addition, there was a great finish which we've come to expect from her over the years. She's dependable in those situations."

Fort Lewis wasted no time coming out of the break as the go-ahead goal found the back of the net in the 48th minute of play. David took advantage of a foul, setting up for a free kick from 45 yards out on the angle and clearing the heads of all players to make it a 2-1 game. It was a similar situation just two minutes later as Yake found space from 40 yards out and benefitted from a squabbling bounce to extend the lead to 3-1. There was no shortage of offense down the stretch, including a pair of waved-off goals for Fort Lewis, but the 3-1 score held as time expired.

"It was great to hit things from distance, and we found a bit of fortune in some of the bounces. But when you shoot that many times things happen for you," said Clarke. "There was more confidence in the attacking third tonight, and we are finding some good layering in the midfield which allows us to connect from the back to the front."
