Three score, Skyhawks claim 3-1 win over Cougars on faculty/staff appreciation night

DURANGO, Colo. – Senior Madyson Barela scored her second goal in as many games as the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team captured a 3-1 win over Colorado Christian University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play on Friday. In front of a vivacious crowd on faculty and staff appreciation night, the Skyhawks improved to 3-6-1 overall and an even 2-2 in league play while the Cougars fall to 3-7, 2-3 RMAC.

"I'm proud of the collective effort that we saw tonight," said head coach Damian Clarke. "The team has grown a ton, and a bit of bravery on the ball is beginning to build an identity for us. Getting three goals from different players is a good sign of growth."

The teams were evenly matched when it came to shots, picking up 13 apiece. Fort Lewis held an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal, led by sophomore Elizabeth David and Barela who each picked up two. Sophomores Julia Johnson and Aubrey Swindle each earned their first goals of the season to seal the win. Sophomore Katlyn Rosenbaum played a season-high 90 minutes in goal and racked up four saves in her first win of the season.

Barela wasted no time picking up her second goal of the season in tonight's match as the senior found herself in good position off a pass from Swindle. Barela faked right, sliding the ball to her left foot and dropping the defender before sending a towering shot from 25 yards out past the outstretched arms of the keeper. The Cougars 10 minutes later with a goal from Jessie Sims that caught the far post and trickled in for the game-tying score.

"CCU really came into the game after that goal, and we didn't negotiate that as well as we'd have liked," recognized Clarke. "As a staff, we were most pleased with our resilience after CCU tied it up. We had some big saves from Rosenbaum and a great push in the final five minutes of the half."

The game looked to remain knotted heading into the half, but the final set piece of the opener proved otherwise. Johnson was called on to take the corner and lived up to the expectation as time ticked away. The Alaska native unloaded from the right side and served the ball into a cluster of expectant players, but the shot made its way all the way through the traffic for the eventual game-winning score.

The Skyhawks' third goal of the match was added to the scoreboard in the 50th minute, this one off the foot of the always dangerous Swindle who has narrowly missed a number of scoring opportunities throughout the season. She made up for lost time, though, beating three defenders from midfield and finding space at the top of the box to set up for the shot. The sophomore took her time, sensing the incoming CCU pressure and stepping back to pop the ball high left for the 3-1 lead.

The Cougars had a pair of late opportunities off the set piece, including one in the 82nd minute that resulted in Rosenbaum's third save off the header attempt. CCU's final try came with two minutes remaining on yet another header, but Rosenbaum made the right move to charge forward before the approaching Cougar attacker could catch the deflection. Fort Lewis maintained possession for the remainder of the match to secure its third home win of the season.

"What has to be acknowledged is  the great service on the corner tonight from Johnson and the extra work that Swindle has been putting in over the past three weeks. Today it paid her and all of us back," noted Clarke. "We also have to mention the work of Gaby Meraz-Fishbein who was busy at midfield and proved to be collected in her decisions to keep the ball."

Fort Lewis (3-6-1) remains home for a Sunday matchup with Adams State University. Game time is slated for 11:00 a.m. from Dirks Field. The Grizzlies are 2-6 overall and 1-3 in RMAC play, earning a 1-0 win over Western Colorado University last Sunday on the road. Fort Lewis is 14-2-3 all-time versus Adams State and played to a double overtime draw in last season's meeting.
