Skyhawks notch 14th place finish at RJGA South Central Shootout

9/27/2022 6:35:00 PM

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Scorching heat and high winds were among the challenges the Fort Lewis women's golf team faced in the Sonora Desert. After a rocky start in the opening round, the Skyhawks were unable to rally, taking 14th place at the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association South Central Shootout at the Golf Club of Estrella Tuesday evening.

"We did not get off to a good start, and we shot ourselves in the foot at times," Fort Lewis Head Coach Jim Foltz said. "It was 109 degrees out, a lot of teams struggled in the heat, and we were one of them. While the heat and wind were a bit of a learning curve, all these girls know what they are capable of and what the expectations are. Now we adapt, overcome, and come out stronger at the next tournament."

The University of Arkansas Fort Smith won the overall team title with a 588 (291, 297), just twelve strokes over par. As for individual performances, it was The University of Texas Permian Basin's Arnie Taguines who nabbed the first-place overall finish. The freshman shot a 140 (69, 71) and finished four strokes under par for not only her first collegiate event win, but the first in UT Permian Basin women's program history.

On the Skyhawks scorecard it was trio-finish for a tie in 64th. Brooke Sturtevant, Kendal Gutierrez, and Emma Tornroos each finished with a 163 (+19). Emilia Manntz finished in a tie for 67th with a 164 (+20) and Peyton Glenn in a tie for 78th with a 172 (+28). Molly Schwartz finished in a tie for 42nd shooting a 157 (+13), but she competed as an individual and her score did not count towards the team's final card.

Day One (323, +35)
Tornroos led FLC in the opening round, scoring three birdies and five bogeys for a 74 (+2) finish. Schwartz shot the second-best card in round one, finishing with a 78 (+6) as three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys kept her from par. Overall the Skyhawks women tallied seven birdies, 33 bogeys, and 10 double bogeys. It was a pair of triple bogeys and a lone quintuple bogey that really held Fort Lewis down.

Day Two (325, +37)
Struggles on the course continued into day two for the Skyhawks. Schwartz led the squad with a 79 (+7), but as an individual she could not aid in the team's final total.
