Skyhawks play to draw against Grizzlies, remain unbeaten through nine matches

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team battled blustering conditions on Sunday afternoon, ending the homestand with a scoreless draw against Adams State University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The Skyhawks remain unbeaten through nine matches, holding a 5-0-4 record and a 1-0-2 mark in conference play. It is the best start to a season since 2011 when Fort Lewis was undefeated through its first 12 matches of the year. The Grizzlies move to 2-4-3 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.

Fort Lewis had a 19-9 edge in shots for the match and a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Skyhawks also recorded six corners versus two for the Grizzlies. The defensive trio of freshman Amber Otts, sophomore Rachel Peebles, and senior Elizabeth David each played the full 90 minutes and led the team to its fifth shutout of the season.

Senior Aubrey Swindle led the team with five shots on goal, followed by four players who had one. Freshman Jenna Salazar and junior Sabrina Reyes each tallied three shots for the match. Seniors Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for the shutout, and Rosenbaum earned both saves for the Skyhawks. The opposing keeper earned nine saves on the day.

Fort Lewis had a huge opportunity just 28 seconds into the game when a foul in the box brought on a penalty kick chance. Freshman Ashlyn Salas stepped in to take the kick, but her shot rattled off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless. The Skyhawks had a pair of shots on goal over the following 10 minutes as well as a cluster of chances throughout the 20-minute mark, but the Grizzlies keeper made five saves to preserve the tie. The Skyhawks had a pair of corner kick opportunities down the stretch, but nothing was going as time expired in the first half.

Adams State was better defensively to begin the second half, holding Fort Lewis without a shot through 12 minutes of play. From there, Swindle sent a pair of shots on goal, but quality saves by the opposing keeper kept it tied. The Grizzlies had their first shot of the match in the 62nd minute, a great ball from 25 yards out, but Rosenbaum read it well and punched it out. Salazar picked up two shots in the 84th minute, followed by a beautiful shot from Reyes, but another impressive move by the keeper kept the home team off the board. The Grizzlies got three substitutions in late, but the fresh legs couldn't produce a goal as time expired in a scoreless draw.

"We're disappointed in the result today. Hats off to Adams as they did really well to hang on and keep fighting," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We lacked the energy and a little bit of maturity that this game required. We will get back to training and get ourselves set to play two of the best teams in the country. There's no time to pout about this missed opportunity."
