Women's soccer picks up sixth shutout of the year, ties #16 Mines to extend unbeaten streak

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to 10 matches after playing to a scoreless draw against No. 16 Colorado School of Mines on Thursday evening. The Skyhawks sit at 5-0-5 overall and 1-0-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The unbeaten streak is tied for second all-time in program history, matching the same mark which spanned two seasons from Oct. 27, 2006 to Sept. 14, 2007. Fort Lewis earned its sixth shutout of the year, matching the team's mark from the 2021 season with eight matches remaining in the regular season. The Skyhawks have not allowed a goal in 299 minutes.

"The team came out determined to compete. The back three and defensive center-mids put an impressive 90-minute shift in," recognized head coach Damian Clarke. "We had a few competent attacking movements against an always-excellent Mines team. We're going to take our well-earned point and move on to UCCS."

Mines outshot Fort Lewis 27-5 for the match but held just a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal. The teams combined for 18 fouls. The senior goalkeeper duo of Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for the shutout and earned five saves along the way. Freshman Ann Spence led the team with two shots on goal, followed by senior Aubrey Swindle who had one. Five players played the full 90 minutes, including the defensive unit which lowered its goals allowed average to .40 this season.

The Orediggers dominated possession through the first few minutes of play, firing one shot and seeing another good chance on a throw-in that traveled into the box. Fort Lewis was able to push the ball to their offensive third, and freshman Ann Spence sent the team's first shot on goal in the 12th minute—an attempt that resulted in the opposing keeper's first save. Bravin picked up her first save moments later on a well-read shot from 20 yards out.

The match remained tied through the midway point of the first half despite Mines outshooting Fort Lewis 9-1. Bravin continued to hold it down between the pipes, reading the developing plays well and cutting off oncoming Orediggers to maintain the scoreless half. The Fort Lewis defense was the unsung hero in the opening 45 minutes of play, sacrificing their bodies to block shots and intercept passes en route to a 0-0 deadlock as the horn sounded.

In the second half, Mines was held without a shot until the 52nd minute when Rosenbaum collected her first save high center. Swindle picked a shot on target six minutes later, but the attempt was corralled by the Mines keeper. In the 65th minute, the Skyhawks looked to have scored the go-ahead goal, but an offside call preserved the scoreless match. Rosenbaum came up big with 20 minutes to play, coming away from the net to eliminate a promising threat on a cross from midfield.

Sophomore Rozlin Gomez was credited with a shot in the 79th minute after flicking the ball forward down the far sideline. She cut inside and was met by a pair of defenders, and the pressure was enough to force her shot wide right. Mines countered with a free kick 10 yards outside of the box after drawing a yellow card, but Rosenbaum made the save look easy as the clock drifted under 10 minutes.

The Orediggers continued to see considerable time in their offensive third as time dwindled, but the Skyhawks remained stout defensively with blocked shots holding it scoreless. A late foul saw the home team set up for a free kick near the midfield mark, but Fort Lewis was ready and sent the attempt out of play. The Skyhawks had the final free kick of the night with 13 seconds to go, and the ball tricked into the home box as time expired.
