Skyhawks to face Mountain Lions, No. 5 ThunderWolves at home for a pair of pivotal RMAC matches

DURANGO, Colo. – Momentum in sports can change the dynamic of a single match or even an entire season. Returning to Dirks Field with a seven-match unbeaten streak and unblemished Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team (7-2-2, 3-0-1 RMAC) looks to utilize that momentum as they kick off a four-game home stand this week beginning with Homecoming.
 
The Skyhawks are set to host the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (4-4-4, 0-2-2 RMAC) on Thursday, Oct. 12, at 7:00 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 15, fifth-ranked Colorado State University Pueblo (10-1-1, 4-0 RMAC) will storm Dirks Field for a 2:30 p.m. matchup.
 
Looking Back
Fort Lewis recorded a pair of 4-1 and 3-1 wins over South Dakota School of Mines (3-9, 1-3 RMAC) and Regis University (3-7-2, 1-2-1 RMAC), respectively. Anton Hjalmarsson led the blue and gold in points tallying one goal and three assists across his 142 minutes on the pitch. Gabriel Legendre scored a pair of goals against the Rangers while David Citron and Jakob Larson each netted their first goals of the season against the Hardrockers.
 
Thrice is Nice
Not only does FLC lead the conference in goals scored (27), assists (21), points (75), shots (177), goals per game (2.455), and second rank in score margin (1.37 goals), but the Skyhawks are also the only program in the conference to post three individuals on the top ten list for individual goals scored. Legendre ranks second with eight goals, Hjalmarsson sits in a tie for fourth with six goals, and Tomas Duenes rounds out the trio in a tie for seventh with four goals. Additionally, Duenes is tied for the second-most assists (5) with Hjalmarsson just behind in a tie for fifth (3).
 
Scouting the Mountain Lions
UCCS, who reached as high as 14th on the United Soccer Coaches Top-25 Poll this season, currently stands at 4-4-4 overall and have lost or tied in their last five matches. The Cougars have not emerged victorious since a 2-1 win at Westminster University (6-4-2, 3-1 RMAC) back on Sep. 20.
 
Senior Alex Andersson is the Cougars' leading scorer with six goals thus far on 34 total shots. Cole Van Holland has added two goals as well while five other individuals have scored a single goal. Standing in goal, sophomore Soren Russell has started 11 of UCCS' 12 matches. The six-foot-four goalkeeper has recorded 41 saves, owns a 1.00 goals-against average, and has posted three shutouts.
 
Scouting the No. 5 ThunderWolves
CSU Pueblo stands at a conference-leading 10-1-1 and remains unbeaten through four conference matches. The Pack's lone loss of the season came at the hands of Colorado School of Mines (2-4-5, 1-2-1 RMAC) by a 1-0 score on the Orediggers home pitch. The ThunderWolves are tied with Fort Lewis for the league lead in goals scored (27) and have allowed only eight goals all season.
 
Senior Gabriel Campora leads The Pack and the conference with a commanding 13 goals and two assists through 12 matches. Leading the league in assists for the ThunderWolves is senior Caio Oliveira with 10 thus far. Sophomore Tristan Whitlock has been lights out in goal for CSUP allowing just three goals while making 15 saves against 53 total shots for four shutouts and three combined shutouts. Whitlock boasts a 0.32 goals-against average and 0.833 save percentage.
 
Looking Ahead
The home stand continues next week as Fort Lewis hosts its final two regular season matches on Dirks Field this season. The Skyhawks will welcome Mines on Friday, Oct. 20, for Community Night at 7:00 p.m. followed by Metropolitan State University of Denver for senior day on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1:00 p.m.
