Skyhawks women’s soccer heads out of town to take on Yellow Jackets and Rangers

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team is on the road this week for a pair of important Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matches against Black Hills State and Regis University.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks went 1-1 at home last week, first dropping a 2-0 decision to No. 5 Colorado Mesa University and then earning a 2-1 win over Westminster on Sunday. In the Colorado Mesa loss, the Mavericks ended the match with a 26-12 advantage in shots and a 13-3 edge in shot on goal. Senior goalkeeper Riley Bravin recorded a season-high seven saves while senior Katlyn Rosenbaum had four on the evening. Junior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein led the team with three shots while three different players sent a shot on goal. Senior Elizabeth David, junior Sabrina Reyes, and freshman Ann Spence played the full 90 minutes.

In the win over Westminster, the Griffins led the way with 16 shots compared to 12 for Fort Lewis. Both teams had six shots on goal. Junior Gabi Meraz-Fishbein accounted for both goals. Freshman Ann Spence and Meraz-Fishbein each had a pair of shots on goal. Junior Danielle Gonzales, a 2021 All-Conference player, made her return to the pitch after suffering a season-ending injury early last season and immediately notched an assist. Senior goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for five saves.

Scouting Black Hills State
The Yellow Jackets are 3-8-2 this season and 1-5-2 in RMAC play following a winless weekend at home. BHSU dropped matches to UCCS (5-0) and CSU Pueblo (4-0). The team is allowing 2.31 goals per game from their opponents compared to a 1.15 goals per game average of their own. Jayda Hammer leads the team with four goals, followed by two players with a pair. Hailey Warren has three assists to lead all players. Two goalkeepers have split time this season, starting seven and six games, respectively. Makayla Dannely leads the way with a .86 goals against average.

Fort Lewis is 5-0-1 all-time against BHSU. Last season, the Skyhawks earned a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Sabrina Reyes and Madyson Barela. Fort Lewis outshot BHSU by a 20-4 margin.

Scouting Regis University
The Rangers are 10-3-1 this season and 6-1-1 in conference play following a win and tie over the weekend. First, Regis earned a 2-0 win over CSU Pueblo before settling for a 2-2 draw against (RV) UCCS. Regis is tied for second in the conference standings with 19 points. The Rangers are averaging 2.86 goals per game compared to 1.21 for their opponents. Individually, the team is paced by Natalie Bunch who has 10 goals and three assists—her 10 goals lead the league. Madeline Gardner backs her up well with eight goals and a team-best four assists. Goalkeepers have split time for the Rangers, led by Grace Glover who owns a .65 goals against average in nine matches.

Fort Lewis is 12-35-4 all-time against Regis, dropping last year's meeting by a 1-0 final. On the road, the Skyhawks are 4-19-2 all-time versus the Rangers. 

Around the RMAC
The league is represented on the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll by Colorado Mesa which sits at No. 5 with a 9-0-1 record. Mines dropped two spots to No. 18 following a 1-0-1 weekend at home. In the South Central Region, Colorado Mesa and Mines are first and third, respectively, followed by UCCS (4th), Regis (5th), MSU Denver (7th), and Fort Lewis (10th).

Mesa leads the conference in goals per game (3.00) and goals allowed per game (.40). Fort Lewis ranks second in goals allowed per game (.64). Regis' Natalie Bunch leads the conference with 10 goals per game. Swindle is tied for second in the league with three game-winning goals.

Inside the Numbers
After Sunday's home win, Fort Lewis has now matched its win total from the 2022 season with five regular season matches remaining. The team is averaging 1.46 goals per game compared to a mark of less than one goal per game last season and has surpassed its goals total from last season (16) with 19 on the year. The Skyhawks are also holding their opponents to an impressive average of .77 goals per game. The Skyhawks have a balanced attack with 13 players credited with goals, led by three goals from Meraz-Fishbein and Swindle. Haley Stafford and Swindle lead the team with three assists each, followed by Elizabeth David and Sabrina Reyes who have a pair. Katlyn Rosenbaum and Bravin have split time at goalkeeper and combine for a .77 goals-against average. Bravin has faced 81 shots and owns a 4-2-3 record.

Fort Lewis will be home for a Thursday/Sunday slate against Colorado Christian and MSU Denver next week. First, the team will face Colorado Christian on Thursday at 4:00 p.m., followed by a 1:00 p.m. match on Sunday against MSU Denver.
