Men’s soccer battles to 1-1 draw against MSU Denver

DURANGO, Colo. – In a near-dead-even match, the Fort Lewis men's soccer team was able to equalize once put into a deficit but unable to seize its minute opportunities in the late minutes, the Skyhawks ultimately fought to a 1-1 draw against Metropolitan State University of Denver Sunday afternoon on Dirks Field.

The tie places Fort Lewis at 9-3-3 overall, 5-1-2 in conference standings, and gives the Skyhawks a single point towards their first-place league standing. MSU Denver moves to 6-7-3 and 4-3-1 in RMAC contests.

"Firstly, today was a great day to recognize and honor our seniors for all of the time and effort they've put in over the years," head coach David Oberholtzer shared. "Mentally, we weren't ready for another battle after Friday's match. We played flat and sloppy through long portions of the match. Once we conceded a goal, I thought that really brought some life to us and we began to dominate from then on, but it was a little too late."

It was an even battle for the momentum early on. As both sides continued to exchange minor drives into each other's defending half, the Roadrunners wound up taking the only three shots of the first half, none of which were placed on goal, while both sides took a single corner kick.

Out of the intermission, the pace picked up with both sides rested and prepared to break the stalemate. The Roadrunners drew a foul in the 46th minute to set up a set piece from nearly 30 yards out. Noah Hannula lifted the ball up and into the box and as no Skyhawk could locate the set piece for the clear, the ball rolled inside the left post for a goal.

The deficit brought life to the Skyhawks, and the offense adjustment was almost immediate. In the 60th minute, Anton Hjalmarsson found Aymaro Vargas among a sea of defenders at the top of the box, setting up Vargas to strike through the open lane for the equalizing goal: Vargas' first of the season.

In the end, MSU Denver led the match in total shots seven to six but both sides took an even three shots on goal. Lucas Martin and Ross Miller each tallied two saves.
