Skyhawks swept by #12 Rangers

DENVER, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team suffered a road loss to No. 12-ranked Regis University on Friday, moving to 9-10 overall and 4-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The Skyhawks were limited to a .113 hitting efficiency compared to a .330 clip for the Rangers. Senior Lauren Shea led the team with eight kills, followed by senior Chay Swenson who contributed six. Sophomore Ella Butler led the team by hitting .333 with five kills. Junior Natalia Lambos dished out 27 assists to go along with seven digs. Junior Sarah Wilkey led the team with nine digs.

"Regis is a well-rounded team and they challenged us tonight on all fronts," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "We were prepared for the battle but came up short in our consistency. We will apply what we learned tonight for our fight tomorrow."

Shea and Swenson combined for a trio of kills in the early portion of set one to make it a one-point difference, but the home team managed to maintain the advantage as the score drifted to 11-10. Regis pulled away with a 5-1 scoring run before Swenson went to work challenging the block for a pair of kills to make it 17-14. Despite the Skyhawks' pressure, the Rangers held on to the advantage and eventually claimed the opening set by a 25-22 score. Shea led all players with five kills (.714) while Wilkey recorded five digs.

The Skyhawks saw an early advantage evaporate as the Rangers benefitted from several miscues to force a timeout at 8-4. Out of the break, Fort Lewis scored a pair but the lead extended to 12-7 in favor of Regis. The Skyhawks were forced into a timeout down by eight points and managed to trim the deficit by one thanks to a block from Butler and Shea. Errors plagued Fort Lewis down the stretch, and a kill from the pin ended it in a 25-12 score.

Fort Lewis fought back from an early hole in set three, tying things at six-all after a kill by Butler. The set saw six tied scores through the midway point as a pair of Regis errors had the score at 17 apiece. Hobie put away a kill to give the Skyhawks a one-point edge, but the Rangers recorded the following three points to make it 20-18. Out of a timeout, senior JJ Curry and Hobie each had kills to make it 22-20. Regis scored the match's final three points, though, and ended it in a 25-20 score.
