Hardrockers down Skyhawks on the road in O’Harra Stadium

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Quarterback Braden Wingle became just the 11th quarter in program history to eclipse 3,000 career passing yards as the Fort Lewis football team (0-8, 0-6 RMAC) fell 48-10 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game on the road at South Dakota Mines (4-4, 3-3 RMAC) Saturday afternoon.

"We've been trying to work on bringing the small details from practice into the game, but it felt like we didn't do that today," head coach Johnny Cox shared. "Our offense is doing some things that we can be proud of; we just have to work at starting faster and eliminating some of those three-and-outs. I was excited with how we finished. We really showed character as we stayed a team and guys continued to work hard."

South Dakota Mines' offense ran off with 573 yards of total offense on 56 plays. The Hardrockers threw for 376 yards in the air – predominantly through starting quarterback Jayden Johannsen who threw for 227 yards and four touchdowns on 16 completions – and added another 197 yards on the ground.

Fort Lewis produced 253 yards of offense on the back of 217 passing yards primarily out of the hands of Wingle. Wingle connected with Christopher Thomas Jr. in the third quarter for a 30-yard receiving touchdown, Thomas Jr.'s fourth of the year. Wingle was 18-for-27 (66.7%) for 203 yards and was sacked three times. Cameron Mack led the ground game with 33 rushing yards.

The Skyhawks owned the edge on time of possession 34:33 to 25:27 and penalties against with five for a combined 30 yards to the Hardrockers' five for 47 yards. Fort Lewis, however, could only covert on five of its 15 third-downs and produce 13 first-downs in the contest.

Jacob Penney matched South Dakota Mines' Kaleb Tischler to lead all defenders with eight total tackles. Penney also recorded a solo tackle for a three-yard loss. Jordan Thomas and Justin Romo each recorded two pass breakups.

Notables
-Wingle is now the 11th player to eclipse 3,000 career passing yards and currently ranks 11th all-time with 3,118.
-Thomas Jr. has hauled in a touchdown in back-to-back games to lead the Skyhawks with four on the season.
-Penney has led the Skyhawks defense in tackles in each of Fort Lewis' last five games.
