Duenes’ heroics force a critical 2-2 draw with Griffins as the No. 23 Skyhawks look to contend for regular season championship on Sunday

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – In an otherwise commanding performance by the FLC offense, it was two stretches of lackluster defense that allowed the Griffins to take a 2-0 lead, but guided by the offensive prowess of junior Tomas Duenes the Fort Lewis men's soccer team found a way to force a critical 2-2 draw on Dumke Field against Westminster University on Friday night.

The draw places FLC at 9-3-4 on the season and 5-1-3 in conference play. Westminster moves to 7-5-5 overall and 4-2-3 in conference play. Now with 18 conference points, Fort Lewis will need to defeat Colorado Mesa University (9-2-5, 4-0-4 RMAC) to win the program's first regular-season conference championship since 2011.

"Tonight was a big emotional swing for both teams, outside of the first five minutes of each half when we conceded, I thought we looked pretty sharp and dominant," head coach David Oberholtzer shared. "Westminster's keeper made several big saves to keep us off the board. Winning teams find a way to win, and that's what we did tonight. While we didn't come out on top, I'm super proud of how our guys continued to believe, played our game, and a found way to equalize."

A driving Jack Cardwell was able to find just enough space near the penalty line on service from James Miles for the opening goal in the sixth minute. Fort Lewis racked up eight shots in the first half, but goalkeeper Roark Looney tallied three saves to keep the clean sheet.

In the 49th minute, service sent across the box from Ole Songe found just enough room between the Skyhawks' keeper and defenders to Landon Ward who took the easy chip and score.

From then on, it was all Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks tallied the other eight of their 16 total shots in the second half while targeting six shots between the posts. A set piece from Duenes in the 55th minute finally pushed FLC past its sticking point. After Duenes sent the ball into the box, it was Ciaran Feeney who headed it to Kaden Schufft mid-air allowing Schufft to elevate above the keeper and use a header of his own for the goal.

With under a minute on the clock, Jakob Larson sent a last-ditch service ball into the Westminster box. Following two ricochets, the ball wound up with Duenes at the top of the box who cut left, put everything he had into his left foot, and beat the diving Griffins keeper to the right post for the equalizing goal with only 47 seconds remaining.
