Mountain Lions snap Skyhawks’ unbeaten streak

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For the first time this season, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team came out on the losing end of a match.

Fort Lewis fell by a final score of 3-0 to (RV) UCCS on Sunday from Mountain Lion Stadium. The Skyhawks move to 5-1-5 overall and 1-1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while the Mountain Lions improve to 7-2-2, 5-0 RMAC.

"This result is a tough one to swallow, but we have to do it. We have the fourth-ranked team in the country on Thursday, and we have to get prepared," acknowledged Clarke."There's no doubt that we walk away having learned more about our team as a whole and a lot about the competition at the top of the conference."

UCCS held a 12-8 advantage in shots despite Fort Lewis outshooting the home team 7-5 in the second half. The Mountain Lions owned an 8-3 edge in shots on goal. Senior Elizabeth David led the team with two shots on goal, followed by sophomore Josie Coulter who had one. Senior goalkeepers Riley Bravin and Katlyn Rosenbaum combined for five saves, four of which came from Bravin in the first half.

The first 10 minutes of the match were defense-heavy with throw-ins and changes in possession setting the tone. The Mountain Lions saw their first chance on their second corner kick of the contest, sending a well-placed ball into traffic. Bravin leaped above the heads of the crashing players to eliminate the threat. The home team broke through in the 16th minute when a misplayed clear deflected off of Emily Aguilar and found its way to the back of the net to make it 1-0.

Bravin followed it up with a handful of incredible saves to preserve the score. In the 31st minute, the senior was one-on-one with Sydney Lasater. Lasater nearly fooled Bravin, forcing the keeper to dive to her left. The UCCS player took her shot from 10 yards out, and Bravin fully extended her left arm to deflect the shot for her fourth save of the half. The Skyhawks had their lone offensive look with 30 seconds remaining in the half when David nearly snuck in a free kick from distance, but Isabella Whitmore got a hand on it to end the half in a 1-0 score.

The Mountain Lions were able to double the lead just one minute into the second half after earning a penalty kick opportunity. Jade Kinsey stepped up to take the shot against Rosenbaum and tucked it in top left, just below the crossbar to make it 2-0. The home team added their third goal of the match in the 53rd minute when Aguilar crossed the ball to Makayla Merlo. Merlo wasted no time firing off a shot which found space on the right side to extend the lead.

David sent a shot on goal, her second of the match, in the 58th minute, but the attempt was gobbled up by the opposing keeper. Junior Sabrina Reyes and Coulter each tallied shots over the following 15 minutes of play. Sophomore Anna Tucker had a great look in the 85th minute when she caught up to a forward pass from Rosenbaum. Tucker attempted to slot the shot in the far-right side of the net, but pressure from the keeper saw the chance miss wide. The Skyhawks had their final shot of the match in the 87th minute as the Mountain Lions ran the clock down to secure a win.
