Skyhawks swing to season-high efficiency in sweep of Yellow Jackets

DURANGO, Colo. – Back in Whalen Gymnasium after back-to-back weeks on the road, the Fort Lewis College volleyball team treated fans to a sweep over Black Hills State University—hitting at a .348 clip which is the best mark for a Skyhawks team since 2017.

Fort Lewis improved to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Black Hills State fell to 5-10 on the year and 1-5 in conference play.

"We did a great job of putting pressure on Black Hills State tonight. We have been working in practice on executing at a high level with discipline, and we did that tonight," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "Out blocking made it hard for them to score and tough serving kept them out of system. We had all of the momentum, and we're excited to carry that over to tomorrow's match."

In addition to the impressive hitting efficiency for the Skyhawks, they held the Yellow Jackets to a .031 mark on the night. Fort Lewis dominated from the service line with 10 aces compared to just two for Black Hills State. The Skyhawks edged out the Yellow Jackets in blocks (10-6), assists (37-23), and digs (45-29).

Junior setter Natalia Lambos ran a balanced offense and earned 29 assists to go along with nine digs. Senior JJ Curry led the team with nine kills. Junior Alexis Hobie and sophomore Ella Butler each had seven kills on 15 swings. Butler led all players with a season-high eight blocks. Freshman Jordyn Romano recorded six kills on a season-best .625 efficiency. Junior Sarah Wilkey led the team with 15 digs and was errorless on serve receive.

In set one, Curry went on a run at the service line, earning a pair of service aces to make it an impressive 16-4 lead. During the stretch, Fort Lewis saw kills from Butler and Hobie as well as an onslaught of attacking errors from Black Hills State. The visitors got a pair back, but Hobie responded with another kill to extend the lead to 13 points. Curry got the Skyhawks to set point, and freshman Alina Nunez earned a kill out of the back row to close it out in a 25-11 final.

Another run got Fort Lewis ahead in the second set, this one fueled by Wilkey's serve. The junior picked up a service ace, and four players put away kills to see an early 10-3 lead. The teams traded points after the run before a kill from Romano had the Skyhawks up 15-9. Fort Lewis enjoyed a 5-1 scoring run in the later points to extend the lead to 21-12 off a Curry kill. The Yellow Jackets made it to 16 points, but a block and set-sealing Romano kill wrapped it up in a 25-16 score.

Fort Lewis saw itself ahead 10-4 in what would be the final set with the block stepping up early. The lead grew to 15-7 with Lambos at the service line. Black Hills State score a trio of points to pull within five, but Fort Lewis responded with a 6-1 run to make it a 22-12 set. Hobie put away her sixth kill of the night to make it match point, and her seventh found the floor to secure the home sweep.
