No. 10 Skyhawks to meet Mountain Lions for a third time in opening round of NCAA Tournament

11/16/2023 11:30:00 AM

DURANGO, Colo. – Making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2011, the eighth-seeded Fort Lewis men's soccer team (11-4-4) is slated to face a familiar ninth-seeded University of Colorado Colorado Springs (10-5-5) lineup in the opening round on Friday, Nov. 17, at 2:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time at Stang Park on the campus of first-seeded and host institution Midwestern State University (19-0-1) in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The match will be live streamed for free on the Lone Star Conference Network with live statistics provided as well courtesy of MSU Athletics.

Fort Lewis and UCCS will play for the third time this season. It's an even 1-1 split on the season with both matches being played on Dirks Field in Durango, Colo. The Mountain Lions took the regular-season match by out-pacing the Skyhawks en route to a 3-2 victory while FLC flipped the script in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals to walk away with a commanding 4-0 rout.

Last Time Out
The Skyhawks are coming off a 2-0 loss in the RMAC Tournament Championship. Fort Lewis hosted second-seeded and 16th-ranked Colorado State University Pueblo (15-4-2), however, FLC could not duplicate its mid-season success nor slow down Gabriel Campora and his two-goal outing for the Pack.

All-Conference Skyhawks
Anton Hjalmarsson leads the Skyhawks in postseason awards as the league's Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Hjalmarsson matched Gabriel Legendre, a First-Team All-RMAC selection, with a conference second-best 10 goals while also making eight assists. Loic Jean-Baptiste earned First-Team honors at midfield after adding four goals and three assists of his own. Junior Tomas Duenes was named a Second-Team honoree at forward after matching Hjalmarsson for the second-most assists in the league with eight while also racking up seven goals. Kaden Schufft was the final player to earn Second-Team honors as a defender for providing two goals and two assists from the back line. Head coach David Oberholtzer was named the Coach of the Year.

Scouting the Mountain Lions
UCCS has earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history after seeing its season possibly come to an end at the hands of the Skyhawks in the RMAC Tournament Semifinals. Alex Andersson, a recent First-Team All-Conference honoree, has captained the team all season and leads the roster with eight goals and two assists. Named to the RMAC All-Tournament Team, Peter Chang sits just behind Andersson with six goals in just 465 minutes.

Kolby Raineri posted five goals and seven assists on the season en route to a Second-Team nod while Marvin Putu and Lars Walczyk round out the Second-Team honorees. Goalkeeper Soren Russell leads the roster with 72 saves and 20 goals allowed, however, a red card issued in the RMAC Tournament Semifinals will sideline Russell and give Declan Domyan the start in Texas. Domyan finished out the match against Fort Lewis and allowed three goals while making two saves across 36 minutes while playing with 10 men on the pitch.

Looking Ahead
Survive and advance is the name of the game in the postseason, and an FLC win would mean moving on to the second-round match against top-seeded Midwestern State on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 2:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
