Sturtevant, Call lead Fort Lewis at RJGA Cactus Thaw!

EL PASO, Texas – Aidan Call and Brooke Sturtevant finished in a tie for eleventh and eighth place in their respective fields as the Fort Lewis College men's and women's golf teams each notched a fifth-place finish at the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association's Cactus Thaw! at the Painted Dunes Golf Club.
 
Odessa College's Claudia Alnajim and Ailsa Brannock each finished ten strokes above par (154) to tie for the individual title. For the men, Garden City Community College's Anthony DeSchutter captured the individual title as the only athlete to finish below par with a final 143 on the scorecard (72, 71). Western New Mexico won the men's team title with a 604 (+28) and Odessa College the women's title with a 632 (+56).
 
INSIDE THE SCORECARDS
Sturtevant had the highest individual finish of any Skyhawk this weekend. Playing from the white tees with a total course yardage of 6,148 yards, Sturtevant finished the tournament with a 165 on the scorecard (84, 81), 21 strokes above par. On the men's side, Call had the highest finish among the Skyhawks with a 155 final total (74, 81), 11 strokes above par.
 
As a unit, the men's squad finished 59 strokes above par with a team total of 635. As for the women's team, the Skyhawks finished with a team total of 677 finishing 47 strokes above par. The women totaled 65 pars and eight birdies to the men's 85 pars and 17 birdies.
 
ROUND ONE (Men – 311, +23 | Women – 342, +54)
Day one favored the men's team as Henry Poston led all Skyhawks in a four-way tie for second place. Poston finished just one stroke above par thanks to a pair of birdies to offset his three bogeys. Sturtevant, Kendal Gutierrez, and Emma Tornroos all finished in a tie for 13th after the opening round, finishing 12 strokes above par with 84s on the scorecards.
 
ROUND TWO (Men – 324, +36 | Women – 335, +47)
In round two Sturtevant was the only member of the trio from round one to shave off any strokes. Sturtevant was able to notch three birdies in the second round to finish with an 81, nine strokes above par. Ronald Kildall III led the men on day two as the only Skyhawk to break 80 with a 77 on the scorecard thanks to a pair of birdies to try and offset five bogeys.
 
NEXT UP
Both teams will enjoy a few weeks of rest before returning to competition. The men's team will return to play first, taking on the Las Vegas Desert Classic at the Boulder Creek Golf Club on Mar. 6-7. The women's team will take an extra week off before returning on Mar. 13-14 for the Midwestern State Invitational at the Wichita Falls Country Club.
