Skyhawks close out road trip with loss to Hardrockers

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Aided by a season-high 14 three-pointers, the South Dakota Mines women's basketball team downed Fort Lewis College to split the season series in a 93-73 final on Saturday night.

Fort Lewis fell to 9-17 overall and 6-14 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while South Dakota Mines improved to 4-22, 4-16 RMAC.

The Skyhawks shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the field compared to a 54.9 percent (28-of-51) clip for the Hardrockers. Fort Lewis had eight three-pointers on the night versus 14 for the opposition. The Skyhawks were held to just 17 rebounds on the night—a season-low. South Dakota Mines committed 15 turnovers on the evening compared to nine for Fort Lewis.

Sophomore Avery Evans led the team with 15 points to match a season-high which she established on December 30 versus South Dakota Mines. Senior Alyssa Adams followed with 13 points and a team-high five rebounds. Senior Ember Cervantes was the final Skyhawk to reach double figures with 11 points.

Fort Lewis scored the game's opening bucket just 12 seconds into play, but that would be all for the Skyhawks for the following six minutes of play as the Hardrockers build a 17-2 advantage. Adams paused the run with her second make of the night, followed by a layup from Evans to make it an 11-point game with 3:14 to go. Evans went to work from there, scoring five for Fort Lewis to see the score at 26-11. Adams knocked down a three at the buzzer to see the deficit at 14 points heading into the second quarter.

Graduate student Kaitlyn Bell got the Skyhawks to the 20-point mark with a turnaround jumper in the second, complimenting strong defense to hold South Dakota Mines scoreless through the first half of the quarter. The senior duo of Brooke McGee and Adams scored five points to make it a 42-32 game with under a minute remaining in the half. Fort Lewis would force a late turnover to hold the score heading into the break.

The Hardrockers flourished from three in the third quarter, including a make at the 7:50 mark to see the score at 53-35. The home team added three more from beyond the arc to extend the lead before a driving layup from junior Kelsey Sorenson made it a 63-45 game. Freshman Audra Vine closed out the quarter with a beater to see the Skyhawks behind 73-49 after three. The Hardrockers were 7-of-8 from three in the quarter en route to a 31-point burst.

The Skyhawks earned a bucket from Billy, her second of the night, to begin the fourth quarter. Senior Ember Cervantes got the team going from free with a make at the 6:20 mark, followed by a layup 50 seconds later for an 81-62 score. With under a minute to play, McGee drained her second three of the night to see the score at 90-72 heading into a late timeout. Evans ended the game at the charity stripe, bringing her point total to 15 in a 93-73 final.
