Skyhawks fall at home to Roadrunners, 67-51

DURANGO, Colo. – In Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Friday night, the MSU Denver Roadrunners used an explosive first quarter to down the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks by a final score of 67-51. Fort Lewis fell to 9-18 overall and 6-15 in conference play while MSU Denver improved to 15-12, 13-8 RMAC.

The Skyhawks shot 39.5 percent (17-of-43) from the field compared to a 41.7 percent (25-of-60) clip for the Roadrunners. MSU Denver pulled down 37 rebounds versus 31 for Fort Lewis. The Skyhawks committed 23 turnovers on the night.

Sophomore Avery Evans led the team with 11 points to go along with a team high eight rebounds. Freshman Lanae Billy followed with 10 points while graduate student Kaitlyn Bell recorded eight points. Junior Kelsey Sorenson had six points and six rebounds. MSU Denver's Kendra Parra led all players with 17 points.

The Roadrunners burst ahead to a 16-0 lead after six minutes of play before a turnaround jumper from Misner dropped in to stop the run.Sophomore Sadie Misner and Evans combined for four points down the stretch to make it a 20-6 game at the end of the first quarter. The Skyhawks were just 2-of-10 in the quarter compared to an 8-of-14 mark for the Roadrunners.

In the second quarter, the Skyhawks got off to a strong start with scores from Bell, Evans, and Sorenson to see the score at 27-13. The senior duo of Alyssa Adams and Brooke McGee followed with a jumper and three pointed to cut the lead to 15 points with 2:29 to go. Fort Lewis closed out the half with free throws from Sorenson and Evans to make it a 38-23 game at the buzzer.

Billy got in on the scoring action out of the break to pull the team as close as it had been since the first quarter at 40-28. The Roadrunners responded with three-straight threes to extend the lead again. Freshman Kate Gallery was the team's final scorer in the third quarter with a jumper at the 2:10 mark, leading to a 54-32 score heading into the fourth.

In the early goings of the fourth, it was Billy again as the freshman accounted for five-straight points in the first two minutes of play. Bell went on the rattle a pair of shots in before Fort Lewis went on a three-minute scoreless stretch to take the game into its final two minutes. Senior Tayla Nez hit the team's third three of the game with under a minute to play before the clock expired on a 67-51 contest.

Fort Lewis (9-18, 6-15 RMAC) will play in its final home game tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. versus No. 16/17 Colorado School of Mines (21-5, 17-4 RMAC). The Orediggers are coming off a 64-60 loss to Adams State University this evening.

When the teams met in January, the Orediggers used huge first and fourth quarter surges to earn a 74-45 win. The Skyhawks shot 34.8 percent (15-of-46) from the field compared to a 41.3 percent (26-of-63) mark for the Orediggers. Mines connected on nine three-pointers versus just three for Fort Lewis. Rebounds were nearly even with Fort Lewis edging out Mines by a 39-38 margin. The Skyhawks committed a season-high 32 turnovers which led to 31 points for the opposition.

Prior to tomorrow's tip-off, the Skyhawks will honor their 2022-23 senior class. Included in the festivities are Alyssa Adams, Kaitlyn Bell, Brooke McGee, Tayla Nez, and student assistant coach Beck Hix.
