Stone lifts Fort Lewis to split on day two with Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – While the Fort Lewis College softball team was defeated by Colorado Mesa University 4-3 score in game three, Kayla Stone hit a two-run go-ahead home run in the top of the seventh inning of game four to notch the Skyhawks first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the season 6-4. The Mavericks won the overall series 3-1.

Picking up its first conference win of the season, Fort Lewis moves up to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in RMAC games. Colorado Mesa moves to 5-7 overall and 3-1 in RMAC play. Additionally, the Skyhawks snapped a 29-game losing streak to the Mavericks.

"Opening conference play was a rollercoaster," head coach Dwight Sanders said. "We saw some good, bad, and ugly. I'm proud of the girls for making an adjustment and sneaking out with a win today. While we wanted both of those games to fall our way, we can still feel good taking a win away from a quality team like [Colorado Mesa]. For not being able to practice outside at all, and having to deal with some adversity early on, I would say the girls are doing well. It's all a part of the process, and we will look to take the next step at home against Mines next week."

GAME ONE – COLORADO MESA 4, FORT LEWIS 3
While both sides kept a clean sheet through the first three innings, Fort Lewis struck first thanks to a solo home run down the left-field line from Alex Tenorio. After holding the Mavs scoreless through four innings, Colorado Mesa finally jumped on the board in the fifth with a pair of runs by way of a solo home run off the bat of Brandi Haller and an error by the Skyhawks a few batters later.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Makayla Westmoreland and Bella Aragon ran the double-steal to swipe home and add an insurance run for the Mavericks, 3-1. With Cara Daughtery and Alyssa Gutierrez on base, Sloan Shotton singled to right-center-field the next at-bat, and a fielding error by the center fielder allowed both runs to score and FLC to tie the game 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning.

After back-to-back singles opened the bottom of the seventh for Colorado Mesa, Aislyn Sharp drew a walk with one out to load the bases for the Mavs. Miranda Pruitt was hit by a pitch the following plate appearance and the Mavericks walked off game three of the series, 4-3.

Caydee Farnworth (0-4) threw the first 5.0 innings for FLC, holding the Mavs to three hits and two runs, only one of which was earned, with five walks and a pair of strikeouts. Amiee Shanks (2-1) was dealt the loss after taking to the circle the final 1.1 innings. Hannah Sattler (3-2) threw her second complete game against Fort Lewis and her fifth of the season. Sattler gave up six hits and three runs, two earned, with one walk and two strikeouts.

GAME TWO – FORT LEWIS 6, COLORADO MESA 4
Colorado Mesa struck first in game four on the back of a solo homer from Pruitt in the bottom of the second inning. In the top of the third just moments later, Shotton sent a two-run blast over the left field fence giving Fort Lewis this 2-1 advantage.

The Skyhawks added an insurance run in the top of the fourth inning, scoring Catheryn Rodman on a fielders choice off the bat of Izzy Giroux. The Mavericks responded an inning later, cutting the FLC lead to 4-2 after a double from Ava Fugate scored one. In the bottom of the sixth, the Mavs finally flipped the script, scoring two runs to take a 5-4 lead on a two-run homer from Sarah Jorissen.

Fort Lewis opened the top of the seventh with back-to-back outs, but Shotton singled to second base the following at-bat to give the Skyhawks a chance. Down to her final strike with two outs, Stone hit a two-run homer to dead center field to recapture the lead 5-4. A pair of back-to-back singles and an error by the Mavs the following at-bats allowed Fort Lewis to push another run across, holding out the final frame to beat Colorado Mesa 6-4.

Shanks threw all seven innings, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Shanks tallied her second complete game and win of the season. Sattler earned the loss for CMU, taking over in the fifth inning and allowing three runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
