Women's lacrosse drops season opener to Bates College, 11-6

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A six-goal first quarter proved to be the difference in an 11-6 loss for the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team in the season opener versus Bates College on Tuesday afternoon.

Bates ended the game with a 35-18 advantage in shots which included a 23-11 edge in shots on goal. The teams were nearly even in the turnover category with a total of 41 for the game. The Skyhawks were 20-of-25 on clears compared to an 18-of-20 clip for the Bobcats.

Senior goalkeeper Averi Basso ended the game with 12 saves for the 15th double-digit save outing of her Skyhawks career. Junior Haley Dostie led all players with three goals—her fifth collegiate game with three goals. Juniors Ellie Martinez, Nina Polk, and Alyssa Strough also picked up goals in the season opener. Freshman Sydney Tannaci and junior Caprietta Abbadessa each had one assist. Leading the way defensively was senior Makenna Carter who ended the contest with a career-high three caused turnovers to go along with three groundballs. Senior JoJo Lutz added two groundballs while senior Rebecca Kiyokawa went for one caused turnover and one groundball.

Basso made her first save of the season 40 seconds into the game which led to a successful clear and a goal from Dostie to go ahead 1-0. Tannaci earned an assist on the goal for her first point as a Skyhawk. The Bobcats responded less than a minute later, converting a Fort Lewis turnover into an equalizer off the stick of Trish Balser. Bates went on to score three more goals, taking advantage of free position chances and turnovers to build a 4-1 advantage with four minutes remaining in the quarter. The Bobcats added two more, and a shot from freshman Marissa LaCivitta was saved as the horn sounded to signal the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter featured an early goal from Bates before shots from Martinez and Dostie tested the opposing defenders. Basso went on to record a pair of saves to hold the score at 7-1 with 6:08 remaining in the half. Bates added another goal at the 1:53 mark which was echoed by Martinez moments later on a free position chance to bring the score to 8-2. Basso picked up a ground ball, the team's sixth of the half, to send the teams into halftime.

Bates outshot Fort Lewis 21-7 in the half, including a 16-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Skyhawks were 8-of-9 on clear attempts. Turnovers were a big piece of the equation after 30 minutes of play with Fort Lewis totaling 10 (seven caused) to just five for Bates. Martinez led the team with three shots, followed by Dostie with two. Basso earned eight saves through the first half of play.

Sophomore Phoebe Ramirez and Carter earned the team's first caused turnovers of the season to begin the third quarter and establish a defensive presence in the opening minute. Kiyokawa followed that up with a caused turnover of her own, resulting in Nina Polk's first shot of the season which missed just wide. After five minutes of play, the Bobcats were able to extend their lead to 9-2 with a goal from Maddy Roelofs. After another goal from the opposition, Dostie added her second score of the afternoon on a free position shot to see the score at 10-3 with just over five minutes left in the third. Sophomore Mikki Brown closed out the quarter with a shot that sailed wide to see the score at 10-3.

The Bobcats were credited with the first shot of the fourth quarter which resulted in Basso's 11th save of the contest. The first shots for the Skyhawks found the back of the net, this time courtesy of Nina Polk for her first goal of the season and second of her career. Taking advantage of a Bates turnover, Fort Lewis was able to net another goal, this time from Strough with the assist going to Abbadessa. Bates broke a nearly 15-minute scoreless stretch with 7:56 to go by earning a goal off the stick of Lauren Wong to send the teams into a timeout with the score at 11-5. Dostie added her third goal of the game with 1:45 remaining, sneaking behind the opposing goalkeeper to make it 11-6. The Skyhawks earned one more ground ball pickup before time expired on the season opener.

Fort Lewis (0-1) will turn its attention to Tuesday, March 7 when the team welcomes Lewis University to Ray Dennison Memorial Field for its home opener at 2:00 p.m. It will be the first-ever meeting between the programs.

Lewis, a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, will play in four games prior to taking on Fort Lewis, including games in West Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, and Wisconsin. The Flyers were 4-10 last season and 2-5 in GLVC play.
