Three players score a pair in an 11-7 loss to Lewis University in Tuesday afternoon women's lacrosse action

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Facing Lewis University in a neutral site contest on Tuesday afternoon, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-7 final in the team's second game of the season.

Lewis improved to 2-2 overall while Fort Lewis dropped to 0-2 to start the 2023 season.

The Skyhawks were outshot by a 27-18 margin, including a 22-15 margin in shots on goal in favor of the Flyers. The teams combined for 48 turnovers while the Skyhawks were 17-of-19 in clear attempts. Lewis earned a 16-5 advantage in draw controls.

A trio of Skyhawks recorded two goals on the afternoon. Sophomore Mikki Brown recorded a pair of goals to go along with three ground balls. Juniors Haley Dostie and Ellie Martinez each picked up two goals on five shots. Junior Caprietta Abbadessa and Martinez each came away with four ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Averi Basso played in all 60 minutes and came away with 11 saves.

Fort Lewis got off to a hot start in the opening minutes of the game with goals from Martinez and Abbadessa establishing a 2-0 advantage. The Flyers cut the lead in half just one minute last with a goal from the right wing. The visitors tied it up in the eighth minute and took an eventual 3-2 lead with 4:49 to go. Senior Autumn Rymerson and Dostie sent shots on goal in the final minutes of the quarter, but the opposing keeper saved the pair to hold the score heading into the second quarter.

The Skyhawks began the second quarter with shots from Dostie and Martinez, both resulting in saves for the Flyers. The Fort Lewis defense stepped up in the following minutes with caused turnovers from senior JoJo Lutz and Rymerson but the consistent offensive pressure from Lewis eventually resulted in their fourth goal of the outing at the 7:59 clip. The Flyer went on the add another pair of unanswered goals to hold a 6-2 lead at the half.

Freshman Valerie Garcia recorded the first shot of the third quarter to set an early tone for the Skyhawks, and the team eventually broke through with a Dostie goal two minutes in the see the score at 6-3. Lewis mirrored the goal at the 11:21 mark to re-establish a four-goal advantage and quickly followed that up with another score to make it 8-3. The Skyhawks ended the quarter with a pair of man-down goals to make it a 9-5 game with 15 minutes to play.

The fourth quarter was defense-heavy to begin as the Skyhawks didn't notch a goal until the 6:36 mark. The goal came from Dostie off a dime pass from senior Rebecca Kiyokawa to bring the score to 10-6. Lewis added another on the following possession, but the Skyhawks got the final goal of the afternoon when Brown buried a pass from Garcia in the circle to establish the final score of 11-7.

Fort Lewis will dive right into Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action following Tuesday's game. The team is slated to take on Colorado Mesa University this Friday in Grand Junction for a 4:00 p.m. start from Community Hospital Unity Field.

The Skyhawks are 9-9 all-time against the Mavericks but have lost nine straight, dating back to the most recent win in 2015. Last season, Fort Lewis fell by a 15-4 final on the road and 17-10 in the rematch at home.
