Skyhawks come up empty-handed on final day of South-Central Regional Tournament

LOS LUNAS, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College softball team was unable to build momentum today, falling in succession to West Texas A&M and Simon Fraser 0-9 and 3-6 respectively at the Los Lunas Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.

Fort Lewis now stands at 2-2 overall while Texas A&M advances to 4-0 and Simon Fraser 2-4.

"Today was another step towards our end goal. Our non-conference schedule is meant to challenge us and force us to grow as a team, win or lose," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Dwight Sanders stated. "The key is to find ways to get everyone to play consistently and remain focused throughout the weekend. It's all about the process, fallings in love with it, and trusting it."

WEST TEXAS A&M 9, FORT LEWIS 0 (5 Inn.)
Heidi Vortherms (2-0) and Emma Parish (0-0) through a combined one-hitter to down the Skyhawks in the opening game of day two. Vortherms threw four innings while giving up the lone hit of the afternoon and striking out six. Parish closed out the final inning with two strikeouts.

Labraida Tenorio (1-1) took the loss for Fort Lewis, throwing three complete innings and giving up four hits, five runs – four of which were earned – and one walk alongside one strikeout. Amiee Shanks (1-0) took control of the circle for the final two innings allowing five hits and four earned runs. Sloan Shotton had the only hit for the Skyhawks.

SIMON FRASER 6, FORT LEWIS 3
The Skyhawks were out in front early in game two, scoring in the top of the first inning thanks to a sacrifice from Catheryn Rodman. Simon Fraser responded with a statement, scoring one run in the bottom of the second, two in the fifth, and one more in the sixth for the 4-1 lead. Fort Lewis then closed the gap in the sixth inning with two runs thanks to a sacrifice from Izzy Giroux and an error by the Red Leafs. Simon Fraser tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, but unable to find a base runner in the seventh, the Skyhawks finally fell.
