Kot captures D2CCA First Team All South-Central Region honors

DURANGO, Colo. – Akuel Kot, a member of the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team, has been tabbed with First Team All South-Central Region honors, the Division II Conference Commissioners Association announced Friday morning. Kot is the first Skyhawk tabbed with first-team honors since Joshua Blaylock back in 2016-17.

Kot, recently named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player, adds to his list of awards this season such as First Team All-RMAC honors, an RMAC All-Tournament Team nod, and three RMAC Offensive Player of the Week awards.

"This is a tremendous accomplishment and honor for Akuel," head coach Bob Pietrack shared. "He's very much deserving of being mentioned among the region's best players. Kot is such an incredibly humble and hard worker that any individual accolade is well earned."

Native to Amarillo, Texas, Kot has been with the Skyhawks since 2019-20 but has emerged this season as one of Fort Lewis' and the nation's best scorers. The Skyhawks are amidst one of the best seasons in program history led by Kot's 24.4 points per game, a mark that ranks fourth among Division II and ninth across all NCAA Divisions (I, II, III).

Known for his lethal step-backs and fearless shooting, Kot is one pace to break a handful of single-season records. With a 51.0% shooting output from the field, 38.7% clip from the three-point line, and 86.2% average from the free-throw line, Kot has never finished below double figures. The junior has scored 20 or more points on 22 occasions as well as 30 or more points in seven different outings.

On defense, Kot averages 3.0 rebounds per game to pair with 1.3 assists per game, 39 total steals, and 12 blocks. Kot has already broken the program's single-season scoring record with 756 points, surpassing Alex Herrera (2014-15) and Joshua Blaylock's (2016-17) previous mark of 687. Back on Nov. 19, Kot also broke the program's single-game scoring record with 45 points against the University of Texas Permian Basin, topping his previous best of 42 points last season against Colorado State University-Pueblo.

With 218 made free throws this season, Kot is on pace to break the single-season made free throws record of 224 set by Alex Herrera back in the 2014-15 season. Additionally, Kot has taken 253 free throw attempts placing him third all-time single-season free throw attempts behind Kirk Archibeque's 286 back in 2008-09.

Black Hills State University's Joel Scott was named the South-Central Region Player of the Year. Colorado Mesa University's Blaise Threatt was also tabbed with First-Team honors, while Colorado School of Mines' Brendan Sullivan and Adam Thistlewood round out members of the RMAC represented.

The Skyhawks season continues this Saturday, Mar. 11, with the opening round of the NCAA Tournament and the South-Central Regional hosted by West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas. Dealt the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Fort Lewis will take on No. 7 seed Lubbock Christian University (19-11) at 1:30 p.m. MST.
