No. 7/5 Skyhawks gear up to take on Chaparrals in opening round of NCAA Tournament

DURANGO, Colo. – Seventh-ranked Fort Lewis College men's basketball is headed back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017-18. The second-seeded Skyhawks will tip off against seventh-seeded Lubbock Christian University this Saturday, Mar. 12, at 1:30 p.m. Mountain Standard Time inside the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas.
 
Saturday's game will be streamed live on the Lone Star Conference Network with live statistics available as well courtesy of West Texas A&M University Athletics. Fans can purchase tickets and find all information regarding the South-Central Regional on the tournament site HERE.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Fort Lewis is riding high after capturing the program's seventh Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Championship last Saturday, Mar. 4, in Grand Junction, Colorado. The Skyhawks entered the final four of the tournament with the No. 2 seed after downing Regis University (12-17) in the quarterfinals at home in Durango, Colo., 96-89.
 
In the semifinals, Fort Lewis defeated 16th-ranked Black Hills State University (25-5) by a score of 83-78 led by the duo of Akuel Kot and Junior Garbrah. Kot paved the way with 32 points while Grabrah – whose performance led to an All-Tournament Team honor – provided a career-high 22 points as well. In the Championship, the Skyhawks got revenge on 13th-ranked Colorado School of Mines (26-5) who had defeated FLC at home (75-64) in the final game of the regular season. While was the leading scorer for Fort Lewis once again, a 16-point, 13-rebound double-double from Brenden Boatwright and a 19-point performance from Obi Agbim helped the Skyhawks surpass the Orediggers and capture the title, 82-76.
 
SCOUTING THE CHAPARRALS
Lubbock Christian enters the NCAA Tournament with a 19-11 overall record after falling to then-22-ranked West Texas A&M 76-70 in the semifinals of the LSC tournament. The Chaparrals hung tough with the Buffaloes, owning a 34-33 lead at halftime while outshooting WTAMU from the field 49.0% to 40.6% and from the free throw line 88.9% to 80.0%.
 
Rowan Mackenzie has been the Chaps leader on both ends of the floor all season. The six-foot-three guard from Perth, Australia, leads the roster in both points (19.7) and rebounds (6.6) per game. Russell Harrison and Najeeb Muhammad provide the only other double-figured outputs at 16.2 and 10.3 points per game respectively.
 
As a unit, the Chaps rank fourth among the LSC in offensive points per game (73.0) and sixth in defensive points per game (67.3). Lubbock Christian leads the LSC shooting 47.8% from the field and ranks second from beyond the arc shooting 36.5%.
