Women's lacrosse RMAC opener goes to No. 24 Mavericks in a 19-7 final

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team was held to just two goals in the second half of play en route to a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season-opening loss to No. 24 Colorado Mesa University on Friday.

The Skyhawks dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play while the Mavericks improved to 1-1, 1-0 RMAC.

Senior Autumn Rymerson led the team with two goals while junior Ellie Martinez paced the squad in points after a one-goal, two-assist outing. Junior Haley Dostie recorded one goal and one assist while junior Nina Polk and freshmen Zoi Delgado and Valerie Garcia each chipped in one goal. Senior Makena Carter led all players with four groundballs, followed by three from freshman Samantha Rodgers. The team picked up 10 caused turnovers.

The Skyhawks wasted no time going up 1-0 after an opening draw control win from Rymerson resulted in Dostie's sixth goal of the season. The Mavericks found the equalizer moments later, but Martinez earned a go-ahead goal at the 12-minute mark. Colorado Mesa earned back-to-back goals to claim a 3-2 advantage after five minutes of play. Sophomore Mikki Brown and junior Kaylin Vanzant tallied shots over the ensuing minutes but neither was directed on target to hold the score in favor of the home team.

The Mavericks found another goal to go up by a pair, but Polk cut the lead to one off the dish from the top of the circle from Martinez. Colorado Mesa's Kiley Davis ended the quarter with her second goal of the afternoon to see a 5-3 lead for the Mavericks after one. Colorado Mesa owned a 10-7 advantage in shots for the quarter while Fort Lewis had a 7-6 groundballs edge.

The Skyhawks' defense held off the Mavericks for the first two minutes of the second quarter, including Basso's third save of the game, but the home team eventually broke through to double the lead at 6-3. The Mavericks went on to score on a pair of free position chances, followed by a goal at the 7:11 mark to take a 10-3 lead. Rymerson got the Skyhawks back on track at the four-minute mark with an over-the-shoulder snipe, assisted by Dostie, for her first score of the game. She added her second just minutes later on a similar shot with the assist coming from Martinez.

Colorado Mesa found another eight-meter shot with under a minute remaining in the half, but Basso's quick reaction resulted in her seventh save to make it a 10-5 score after 30 minutes of action. The Mavericks held a 23-11 edge in shots, including a 17-7 advantage in shots on goal, for the half. The Skyhawks were called for 16 fouls compared to six for the Mavericks.

Colorado Mesa extended the lead with two unanswered goals out of the break before a free position goal from Zoi Delgado made it 12-6 with 10 minutes to go. The Mavericks added another less than a minute later before the Fort Lewis defense shut down the opposition's offense for the following five minutes of play. The home team looked to have another goal lined up with a free position change, but Basso picked up another save to bring her total to nine. Fort Lewis sent the quarter's final two shots toward goal, one blocked and one high, to close out the third quarter in a 15-6 deficit.

The lead extended to 17-6 with two quick goals to open the fourth quarter while holding the Skyhawks without a shot. The Mavericks went on to score two more goals before Garcia could net the Skyhawks' lone goal of the quarter to end the game in a 19-7 final score. Colorado Mesa closed out the game with a shots advantage of 40-16, including a 30-9 edge in shots on goal.

Fort Lewis (0-3, 0-1 RMAC) will return to the field on Sunday versus Westminster College in Salt Lake City. The team has played in three exhibition games this season, including a recent double overtime loss to Dominican University of California (13-12). Westminster was 4-11 last season and 4-8 in conference play, narrowly missing out on the RMAC Tournament.
