Shotton delivers walk-off hit in doubleheader split with CSU Pueblo

BLOOMFIELD, N.M. – A game two walk-off hit for senior Sloan Shotton secured a doubleheader split for the Fort Lewis College softball team on Saturday versus Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foe, CSU Pueblo. Fort Lewis moved to 7-14 overall and 5-9 in conference play while CSU Pueblo's record shifted to 7-14, 2-12 RMAC.

Game One: CSU Pueblo 10, Fort Lewis 2
The Pack got ahead in the top of the first with a double steal resulting in a 1-0 lead. The Pack followed that up with a home run shot of center field to take a 3-0 lead before a swinging strikeout ended the half. The Skyhawks looked to have a prime chance to cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame after loading the bases with nobody gone, but a line-out double play to left field put two outs on the board. Fort Lewis finally broke through when a passed ball allowed Kayla Stone to score from third, making it a 3-1 game after one.

The second inning passed by without much offensive prowess as both sides picked up a lone single to send things to the third. CSU Pueblo extended the lead the three runs in the third with an RBI sacrifice fly to center, but the damage was minimized a batter later when an 8-6 double play ended the threat. Cat Rodman picked up a one-out single in the bottom of the inning, but a deep line out to center field off the bat of Sabrina Carrillo sent the game to the fourth in a 4-1 score.

The score shifted to 5-1 in favor of the visitors with a two-out solo shot to center field before a great read up the middle by Alex Tenorio sent the Skyhawks to the plate. Cara Daugherty earned the team's lone hit in the bottom of the fourth before a swinging strikeout sent things to the fifth frame. The Pack put up another three-spot in the fifth inning, this time with a double steal and a two-run poke over the fence in left to see the score at 8-1.

Fort Lewis earned hits in the fifth and sixth from Izzy Giroux, Stone, and Daugherty, but none resulted in runs scored to carry an 8-1 score into the final inning of play. CSU Pueblo continued the long ball trend in the seventh, sending one to left center for a 10-1 score. The Skyhawks led off with a walk from Stone, followed by a one-out single from Rodman to put a pair aboard in the bottom of the inning. The Pack buckled down and turned in a fielder's choice to put two outs on the board. The final batter of the game, Caydee Fanworth, recorded an RBI but was tossed out stretching it to a double to end the game in a 10-2 final.

Rodman and Daugherty had a pair of hits in game one while Stone picked up one hit and a pair of walks. Farnworth pitched seven innings, giving up 11 hits to go along with three strikeouts.

Game Two: Fort Lewis 3, CSU Pueblo 2
The visitors got a pair aboard via two-out base hits but starting pitcher Aimee Shanks earned a swinging strikeout to send Fort Lewis to the plate. It was a similar outing for the Skyhawks in the bottom of the inning with a pair of pop-outs and a swinging strikeout holding things scoreless. The Pack broke it open in the second when a double steal attempt prompted a throwing error to score both runners, making it 2-0 in favor of the visiting team. In the home half of the inning, Carrillo cut the deficit in half with a line-drive homer to left-center—the first of her Skyhawks career.

Defense and pitching took control of the third inning with ground outs to third, short, and second sending the Pack down in order. It was a similar story for the Skyhawks, with the exception of a lineout to first off the bat of Stone as the game headed to the fourth. The trend continued into the fourth inning with both teams leaving goose eggs on the board in part to a pair of looking strikeouts from Shanks.

Fort Lewis looked to have something cooking in the fifth inning with a single from Daugherty, followed by an infield single by Shotton putting runners on the corners. The Skyhawks took advantage quickly when Shotton was put in motion, forcing a throw-down that allowed Daugherty to cross home plate. The inning would wrap up in a 2-2 score after Stone sent a screaming line drive into the glove of the pitcher for out number three.

Shanks made quick work of the Pack in the top of five, fielding a pair of ground outs to go along with her fifth strikeout to give her team the bats. Carrillo belted a triple to the left-center gap to see a runner in scoring position with two gone, but a deep fly out to center field kept the game at 2-2 heading into the seventh. Fort Lewis defenders turned in their fifth-straight scoreless inning to set up a walk-off scenario with three outs to work with.

The Skyhawks took advantage of three-straight walks to load the bases with nobody out in the seventh. Shotton stepped up to the plate and delivered a walk-off gapper to right center, her second hit of the game, to secure a 3-2 game-two win for the Skyhawks. Shanks ended the game with five strikeouts while inducing 15 ground outs in 102 pitches. Shotton and Carrillo each racked up two hits and an RBI in the win.
