Dostie matches career-high with seven goals in home loss to UCCS

DURANGO, Colo. – A seven-goal afternoon from junior Haley Dostie was not enough in the home opener for the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team that fell in a 16-10 final to UCCS on a blustery day on the rim. The Mountain Lions improved to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while the Skyhawks dipped to 0-6, 0-3 RMAC.

Despite the final score, Fort Lewis outshot UCCS by a 32-27 margin. The Mountain Lions, however, held a 22-21 edge in shots on goal. The Skyhawks earned 29 ground balls, their second-best mark of the season, to go along with 11 caused turnovers.

Dostie led the team with seven goals, her second seven-goal outing of the season, to bring her 2023 total to 23 for the season. The junior also led the team with six ground balls and four caused turnovers—both of which are career highs. Juniors Ellie Martinez and Kaylin Vanzant each chipped in a goal, as well as sophomore Mikki Brown to bring the team's total to 10.

Senior Rebecca Kiyokawa collected three ground balls, two caused turnovers, and a pair of draw controls in the effort. Senior Autumn Rymerson and freshman Sydney Tannaci combined for 11 draw controls. Senior Averi Basso went the distance between the pipes with six saves along the way.

UCCS was led by Brielle Fannin and Olivia Evans who each chipped in four goals. Goalkeeper Madison McGriff turned in 11 saves to go along with five ground balls in her second win of the season.

The Mountain Lions won the opening draw and quickly converted for their first goal of the season just one minute into play. It was Dostie's turn just 30 seconds later as the junior's first goal of the afternoon off the feed from junior Caprietta Abbadessa tied it up. UCCS picked up a caused turnover at the 12:29 mark which ended up resulting in a favorable field position for the go-ahead goal with 11:23 to go.

The teams battled it out defensively over to following several minutes of play, including a caused turnover and ground ball from Kiyokawa. The pressure resulted in another tie game at the 7:44 mark when Dostie beat the keeper from inside the circle to make it 2-2. The Mountain Lions went on to score two straight, but a late goal by Dostie had the Skyhawks down by just one goal after 15 minutes of play.

Fort Lewis opened the second quarter with a pair of shots by sophomore Diamond Velasco, but the attempts drifted wide to hold the score. The Mountain Lions took advantage of the misses and capitalized with a goal from the top of the circle and a free position make to go up 6-3. UCCS added another at the 6:12 mark, but a draw-control win from Tannaci ended in another goal by Dostie to end the scoring drought.

Dostie added another goal with two minutes remaining after a free position chance, making it a 7-5 score in favor of UCCS. Fort Lewis ended the half with ground balls from senior Makenna Carter and Abbadessa, followed by a shot on goal at the buzzer to send to teams into the brief intermission in a 7-5 score.

UCCS saw the most offensive success in the third quarter, opening play by going on a five-goal scoring run that spanned three minutes to go up 12-5. Fort Lewis ended the run with a goal from the close right wing by Brown at the eight-minute mark. The Mountain Lions promptly got the goal back with a free position goal just 30 seconds later. The Skyhawks followed with shots on goal by Vanzant and Rymerson but saves from McGriff held the score. UCCS tacked on two more before Vanzant had the final say in the third quarter, netting her second goal of the season to close it out with a 15-7 score.

The Fort Lewis defense turned it around in the fourth quarter, earning three caused turnovers in the opening three minutes of play to maintain an eight-goal deficit. Dostie did her best to chip away at the visitor's lead, placing another free position shot out of reach to make it a 15-8 game. Martinez echoed the effort at the eight-minute mark with her own free-position goal over the left shoulder of the keeper to cut the lead to 15-9.

The Mountain Lions ended a 12-minute scoring drought at the 5:03 mark to extend the lead to seven goals. The Skyhawks played into another free position opportunity, this one resulting in another goal for Dostie to see things at 16-10. UCCS would send the game's final shot on target with seconds remaining, but Basso's sixth save of the afternoon would close it out in a 16-10 final.

Fort Lewis (0-5, 0-2 RMAC) will be back in Pueblo next week for a Friday afternoon RMAC showdown against CSU Pueblo (1-5, 0-2 RMAC) at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

The Skyhawks hold an 11-2 record, including a 6-0 home mark, over the ThunderWolves, including a pair of key wins last season to secure a spot in the postseason tournament. Fort Lewis is riding a three-game win streak versus CSU Pueblo.
