Martinez and Velasco score in home loss to No. 3 Rangers

DURANGO, Colo. – After being held scoreless in three of four quarters, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team fell in an 18-2 final to No. 3 Regis University to close out the week at home. Regis improved to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Fort Lewis improved to 0-7 on the year and 0-4 in conference play.

The Rangers finished with a 31-11 shots advantage, including a 28-9 margin in shots on goal. Regis picked up 32 ground balls compared to 24 for Fort Lewis. The Rangers edged out the Skyhawks in draw controls (15-8) and free-position shots (6-2).

Scoring for Fort Lewis was junior Ellie Martinez, bringing her season total to nine to rank second on the roster while sophomore Diamond Velasco netted her first goal of the season. Senior JoJo Lutz came away with three ground balls and one caused turnover in the contest. The senior duo of Rebecca Kiyokawa and Autumn Rymerson led the way with three draw controls apiece. Senior Averi Basso played 45 minutes between the pipes, coming away with a team-best five ground balls and 10 saves along the way.

The Rangers were led by Lucy Johnson who netted four goals to go along with an assist. Madeline Shallmoser and Bailey Truex each contributed three goals while Gabby Rothermund led all players with three assists.

In the first quarter, Regis managed to go ahead with its first goal three minutes into play. Basso earned her first save on the following play, but a quick ground ball by the visitors resulted in the game's second goal at the 11:38 mark. Turnovers plagued the Skyhawks on the following four possessions to keep the home team without a shot. Regis took advantage of favorable field position and draw control wins to tack on four additional goals down the stretch, claiming a 7-0 lead after one.

The Skyhawks saw their first shot of the afternoon two minutes into the second quarter when sophomore Mikki Brown sent one on goal, but the keeper's first save held the score. The Rangers were able to take advantage of a yellow card and turnover to net a pair of goals, extending the lead to 9-0 with 11:35 remaining in the half.

Regis added another out of a timeout, but two minutes later it would be Fort Lewis' turn. Martinez used quick feet and trickery to find herself one on one with the keeper as she charged the circle. The junior used finesse to place her shot out of reach, making it a 10-1 game with eight minutes on the clock. Defense continued to work tirelessly to keep the attackers at bay, forcing a trio of turnovers to move the Skyhawks down the field.

Freshman Valerie Garcia got the ball back with a ground ball, leading to a free-position shot for Velasco. Velasco was poised as the whistle blew and sliced a goal past the keeper, celebrating with a noteworthy dance move as the score shifted to 10-2. A draw control by junior Haley Dostie ended the half with the score holding at 10-2.

The Rangers, who were quiet in the second quarter, came out firing in the third. The nationally ranked conference foe opened the quarter with a pair of quick goals before a shot from Martinez had the Skyhawks' offense involved. Lutz earned a caused turnover at the 2:54 mark, but an eventual turnover ended in a Regis goal to make it 15-2 after 45 minutes of play.

Martinez and Rymerson combined for a pair of shots, one of which narrowly missed by hitting the post, to move the game into its final minutes with Regis ahead after netting three fourth-quarter goals. Allie Elliot and Rymerson each added shots on target down the stretch, but a pair of saves ended the game in an 18-2 final.

Fort Lewis (0-7, 0-4 RMAC) will be back in Pueblo next week for a Friday afternoon RMAC showdown against CSU Pueblo (1-7, 0-4 RMAC) at Art and Lorraine Gonzales Stadium.

The Skyhawks hold an 11-2 record, including a 6-0 home mark, over the ThunderWolves, including a pair of key wins last season to secure a spot in the postseason tournament. Fort Lewis is riding a three-game win streak versus CSU Pueblo.
