Basso shines in defensive battle versus Mavericks, Skyhawks fall 10-8

DURANGO, Colo. – Heading into the game's final five minutes deadlocked at eight apiece, Colorado Mesa University netted a pair in quick succession to seal a narrow 10-8 victory in women's lacrosse action on Friday afternoon. Fort Lewis College dropped to 1-8 overall and 1-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Mesa improved to 6-5, 5-1 RMAC.

The Mavericks carried a 35-20 advantage in shots, including a 24-18 edge in shots on goal for the contest. The teams were even with 11 draw controls each while the Skyhawks led the way with five caused turnovers.

Senior Averi Basso kept the Skyhawks in the game for the full 60 minutes, earning a season-high 14 saves along the way. Junior Haley Dostie continued her dominant campaign with four goals, bringing her season total to 35 to lead the team. Friday's game was her fourth of the season with four or more goals. Four additional players scored one goal in the loss, including freshman Sydney Tannaci who netted her second of the season.

Dostie was the team's leader in ground balls with four, followed by senior Rebecca Kiyokawa who came away with three. Kiyokawa led the way with five draw controls to go along with one caused turnover. Freshman Samantha Rodgers added to her season total with three caused turnovers to match a season-high.

Basso was immediately tested between the pipes to begin the first period, facing a free position shot and earning her first save in the process. The Skyhawks sent their first shot on goal at the eleven-minute mark when junior Caprietta Abbadessa tested the keeper in the circle, but a save held the game deadlocked. The Mavericks eventually broke through after three-straight shots with the final attempt finding the back of the net for a 1-0 score.

Mesa went on to extend the lead to 3-0 over the course of three minutes before a free position goal by Dostie had Fort Lewis on the board. The Skyhawks held the momentum, benefitting from a draw control by junior Ellie Martinez and a goal by Abbadessa to close the gap at 3-2. Defense was on lock from there with ground balls by junior Kaylin Vanzant and freshman Zoi Delgado holding the score. Mesa eventually netted its fourth goal of the quarter with 2:01 on the clock, and that score remained as the clock ticked under one minute. Vanzant had the last say in the quarter, corralling a pass from Dostie to send one past the opposing keeper for a 4-3 score.

The Mavericks scored a pair of quick goals in the second quarter before Tannaci could make a free position shot for a 6-4 game. Fort Lewis' defense allowed for another chance on the following possession, kicked off with a Mesa turnover and ground ball by senior Makenna Carter. That led to a foul and a free position for Dostie. The first shot was saved, but Dostie wrangled the deflection and sent a quick shot on target to make it a 6-5 game.

Mesa followed that up with a free position and second chance shot of their own, but Basso held strong between the pipes to keep it a one-goal game. The visitors managed to score again with under five to go, reviving the Skyhawks' offense which began sending an onslaught of shots on target. The final shot of the half, this one by Dostie, found room from the left wing to make it a 7-6 game with 1:53 to go. Kiyokawa won the final draw of the half to send the teams into the break.

The defense shined in the third quarter with an early goal by the Mavericks serving as the lone blemish across the 15 minutes of action. The Skyhawks echoed the attempt at the eleven-minute mark with a trio of shots testing the keeper. The team finally broke through when freshman Valerie Garcia served one to junior Nina Polk for a quick shot and an 8-7 score. The Mavericks continued to shoot, but defense pressure led to ineffective attempts as a handful of shots sailed high to maintain a one-goal game. The visitors had one burst at the 6:35 mark where four shots were recorded, one hitting post, two missing high, and the final being saved by Basso to reset for the Skyhawks.

The scoring drought lasted until the 6:55 mark of the fourth quarter when Dostie buried her fourth of the game to tie it at 8-8 and send the sideline into a frenzy. Mesa responded with a shot that was saved by Basso, followed by a blocked shot by Kiyokawa to hold the score into the final four minutes of play. The Mavericks found an eventual edge with a woman-up chance, taking a 9-8 lead with time dwindling.

A Fort Lewis turnover a minute later led to a one-on-one chance with Basso and the opposing Maverick. The Mesa player appeared to cross the crease as she scored on the play, but the officials disagreed as the score moved to 10-8 in favor of the visitors. Mesa tallied the game's final shot, this one hitting post, as the buzzer sounded on a two-goal home loss.

Fort Lewis (1-8, 1-5 RMAC) will be back home on Sunday to take on Westminster College (3-3, 3-3 RMAC) for a pivotal conference game. First draw is slated for noon from Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
