Ramirez secures 14-13 win for Skyhawks with late goal, six Skyhawks score

DURANGO, Colo. – A go-ahead goal by Phoebe Ramirez with just 44 seconds to go clinched a neck-and-neck win for the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team who exacted revenge over Westminster College, taking the Sunday slate by a 14-13 final.

The Skyhawks improved to 2-8 overall and 2-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while the Griffins dropped to 3-4, 3-4 RMAC.

Fort Lewis was dominant offensively, slinging 33 shots compared to 27 for Westminster—Sunday's shot total was an 11-shot improvement from the previous meeting between the foes in March. The Skyhawks came away with 26 groundballs compared to 19 for the Griffins.

Six Skyhawks netted goals in the win, led by junior Haley Dostie who chipped in four to go along with two assists. Junior Ellie Martinez followed with a season-high three goals while the trio of junior Kaylin Vanzant, sophomore Phoebe Ramirez, and freshman Sydney Tannaci each scored a pair. Sophomore Mikki Brown matched a career-high with two assists, a mark which she previously set on April 16, 2022, versus Westminster.

Defensively, senior Rebecca Kiyokawa led the team with a season-high six draw controls to go along with four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Freshman Samantha Rodgers added two caused turnovers to her stat line, bringing her season total to a team-best 15. Junior Caprietta Abbadessa and freshman Zoi Delgado each added three ground balls. Senior Averi Basso capped off a stellar week with nine saves while going the distance for the win.

The theme of the opening quarter was defense as the first eight minutes went by without a goal from either side. Despite the lack of scoring, Fort Lewis set the tone with three shots on target through the beginning minutes. The Griffins were the first to strike, though, netting an assisted goal from the circle at 6:47 to go up 1-0. Basso earned a free position save on the following possession to hold the score, and the Skyhawks responded with a pair of shots on goal to keep the offensive pressure going.

Westminster broke through with its second goal of the quarter with under three minutes to play, but Fort Lewis cut the lead in half with 1:22 on the board when freshman Valerie Garcia scored on a Dostie pass to make it 2-1. Senior JoJo Lutz ended the quarter with a ground ball to keep it a 2-1 game after 15 minutes of play.

The Griffins answered back after five minutes of play in the second quarter, going up 3-1 to force a Fort Lewis timeout. The Skyhawks took advantage of a Griffin foul moments later, converting with a goal by Martinez to see things at 3-2. The teams went blow for blow under two-straight goals by Tannaci eventually tied the score at 4-4 with 2:39 remaining.

Kiyokawa won the next draw control, leading to a foul on Westminster to kick off an onslaught of shots for the Skyhawks. The third of the sequence, this one by Dostie, broke through to give the home team its first lead of the afternoon at 5-4. Fort Lewis added another with just nine seconds remaining in the half when Ramirez netted a woman-up goal to make it 6-4 at the break.

Out of the halftime break, Fort Lewis scored three-straight goals by Martinez and Dostie to see a commanding 9-4 lead just four minutes into the quarter. Basso was credited with another free position save to follow, but the Griffins finally got on the board on their following possession to make it a four-goal game.

Tannaci and Kiyokawa won the next two draw controls which each led to goals for Dostie and Martinez to extend the lead to 11-5 with five minutes to go in the third. The Griffins ended the quarter with three goals, two of which were free positions to end the third quarter in an 11-8 score.

Westminster carried the momentum over into the fourth, scoring two minutes into play to make it an 11-9 game. The Griffins continued to pepper the goal and eventually tied the game at 12-12 with 6:17 on the clock to bring on a timeout. Three minutes later, the Griffins reclaimed the lead with a goal in the circle with 3:05 left to play. Martinez was clutch with a draw control on the following attempt, leading to a go-ahead goal by Vanzant with 2:48 on the clock.

The Griffins had a chance to reclaim the lead with 1:40 on the clock, sending a free position shot on frame, but Basso stepped up with her biggest save of the game to maintain the tied score. The Skyhawks successfully cleared the ball, followed by a hard-fought ground ball by Dostie to send the clock to under one minute. Dostie didn't panic, though, and sent a pass forward to Ramirez who quickly netted the eventual game-winner to make it 14-13. Dostie came away with the final draw control to take away any chance of redemption for the Griffins, locking up an exhilarating home win for Fort Lewis.

Fort Lewis (2-8, 2-5 RMAC) will remain home this week for a Saturday matchup versus CSU Pueblo. The game will be the inaugural Nike N7 game for the Skyhawks, honoring Native American Heritage and the indigenous student-athletes represented on the women's lacrosse roster. First draw is set for 1:00 p.m. from Ray Dennison Memorial Field.
