Seven Skyhawks score in senior day win over CSU Pueblo

DURANGO, Colo. – Juniors Haley Dostie and Kaylin Vanzant combined for 10 goals to put a bow on a successful home finale for the Skyhawks, guiding the women's lacrosse team to an 18-11 win over the ThunderWolves on senior day.

Fort Lewis improved to 3-8 overall and 3-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while CSU Pueblo dropped to 1-11, 0-8 RMAC.

Before opening draw and in honor of the inaugural Nike N7 game, Chief Hanley Frost of the Southern Ute tribe took the field to provide the day's welcome message. Fort Lewis College then honored its four indigenous student-athletes: JoJo Lutz (Lummi Nation), Nina Polk (Sicangu Lakota Rosebud), Kaylin Vanzant (Muscogee Creek), and Marla Warrior (Seneca Nation).

From there, fans were treated to a senior day celebration where Rebecca Kiyokawa, Makena Carter, JoJo Lutz, and Averi Basso were joined by friends and family on the field to soak in the final game day in Durango.

Taking a look at the team statistics in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup, Fort Lewis outshot CSU Pueblo by a 35-25 margin. The teams were equal with 27 turnovers apiece while the Skyhawks held the edge in draw controls (20-13), ground balls (25-16), and caused turnovers (14-9).

Dostie's six goals led all players and gives her 41 on the year—most by a Skyhawks since 2012 when Ally Kvidera recorded 47. Vanzant followed with four to establish a career-high and give her 11 this season. From there, the trio of freshman Zoi Delgado and juniors Nina Polk and Caprietta Abbadessa chipped in two goals apiece. Six Skyhawks earned assists in the effort.

Senior goalkeeper Averi Basso went the distance with eight saves and a team-best six ground balls to earn her third win of the season. Senior JoJo Lutz earned a season-high three caused turnovers to go along with three ground balls while freshman Samantha Rodgers added her third, three caused turnover game of the season. Senior Rebecca Kiyokawa came away with a career-high nine draw controls in addition to a pair of ground balls.

In the first quarter, the Pack jumped ahead 2-0 in the opening five minutes before the Skyhawks sent a pair of shots toward the goal. Delgado picked up a deflection off the post and passed it ahead to Dostie to cut the lead with her first goal of the game. CSU Pueblo responded dominantly, netting four straight—three of which were in less than one minute of play—to jump ahead 6-1. Kiyokawa won the next draw which led to an Abbadessa goal 30 seconds later to slow the momentum.

Abbadessa scored her second one minute later to see a 6-3 score with 3:31 remaining in the quarter. The Pack took advantage of a turnover on the following Fort Lewis possession, taking it down the field for an assisted goal in the circle to extend the lead to four goals. The offensive display was not over though, and Dostie netter a pair in quick succession to close out the first quarter in a 7-5 score.

The second quarter was more defensive throughout the opening five minutes with freshman Valerie Garcia earning a caused turnover to hold CSU Pueblo scoreless. Dostie had enough of the brief scoring drought, though, and scored on back-to-back possessions to knot the game at 7-7. The Pack won the following drawn control and converted for their eighth goal of the afternoon to reclaim the lead.

Freshman Sydney Tannaci came away with her first caused turnover of the afternoon at the five-minute mark, leading to a successful clear and a goal by Vanzant to see things tied up again. Lutz ended the quarter with a clutch caused turnover and ground ball to keep the Pack off the board as time expired in the half.

The scoreless affair didn't last long after the second half began as Delgado netter the go-ahead at the 13:36 mark. CSU Pueblo scored the tying goal moments later and eventually reclaimed the lead at 10-9 with ten minutes remaining in the quarter. Delgado tied it again, followed by a woman-up goal by Dostie on the assist from sophomore Mikki Brown to make it 11-10.

CSU Pueblo took advantage of a pair of Fort Lewis yellow cards to follow and scored another game-tying goal with 3:46 to go. Following a Skyhawks timeout, Polk scored the team's 12th goal to set off a string of offensive dominance which would remain for the entirety of the contest. Fort Lewis found a two-goal lead moments later off the stick of Vanzant on a free-position shot. Junior Ellie Martinez ended the quarter with a pair of ground balls while Polk scored her second goal of the quarter to make it 14-11 at the buzzer.

Basso picked up another save early in the fourth quarter to continue to hold the Pack back. Basso and Lutz went on to earn caused turnovers which led to another Vanzant goal to make it 15-11. Kiyokawa followed that up with ground ball which led to a goal from sophomore Diamond Velasco to extend the lead to five goals with eight minutes to go. Basso racked up another pair of saves, followed by a Brown caused turnover to get the ball to Vanzant for her fourth goal of the afternoon.

The Skyhawks went on to take advantage of a CSU Pueblo yellow card which led to a woman-up goal for Tannaci to see things at 18-11. Abbadessa won the game's final draw and Basso put a bow on the win with a save as time expired from Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

Fort Lewis (3-8, 3-5 RMAC) will close out the regular season on the road, facing No. 4 Regis University and UCCS. The Skyhawks will take on the Rangers on Friday at 7:00 p.m. from the Regis Turf Field, followed by a 1:00 p.m. contest on Sunday at Mountain Lion Stadium.
