Skyhawks dominate the Pack in 17-9 win, Abbadessa nets career-high five goals

PUEBLO, Colo. – Guided by a career-high five goals from junior Caprietta Abbadessa and a dominant, eight-goal third quarter, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team earned a 17-9 win over CSU Pueblo in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Friday.

The Skyhawks improved to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play while the Pack dipped to 1-8 on the year and 0-5 in league play.

Fort Lewis picked up a season-high 39 shots with 21 finding their way on target. CSU Pueblo recorded 31 shots, 19 of which were on goal. The Skyhawks' defense held the Pack to a 14-of-22 mark on clear attempts while forcing 22 turnovers. The team benefitted from nine free position chances throughout—a season-high.

Abbadessa led all players with five goals, followed by junior Haley Dostie who contributed four goals and a pair of assists to lead the team with six points. Junior Nina Polk also earned a career mark with three goals on three shots on goal for the game. Freshman Zoi Delgado has a career outing with two goals while junior Kaylin Vanzant's two-goal afternoon set a season-high. Freshman Valerie Garcia dished out a career-high three assists along the way.

Freshman Samantha Rodgers and Dostie each had two ground balls to lead the way while Rodgers' pair of caused turnovers paced the group. Senior Rebecca Kiyokawa was a key piece in setting up favorable field position and offensive pressure after coming away with a team-high six draw controls. Senior Averi Basso had her five double-digit save game of the season after recording 10 in 60 minutes of play.

The Skyhawks got off to a quick start after a game-opening draw was won by Dostie and converted to Abbadessa's first goal of the game just 45 seconds into play. Defensive effort, including caused turnovers by senior JoJo Lutz, Abbadessa, and Polk, held the Pack to just one shot over the ensuing six minutes to maintain the lead. Abbadessa would go on to score two more goals to make it a 3-0 game after nine minutes of action.

CSU Pueblo found an answer at the 3:28 mark to cut the lead to two goals, but Basso immediately responded with a save on the next attempt to hold the score. The home team had the final goal of the opening quarter, coming off the stick of Elise Magee for her 18th goal of the season.

The Pack carried the momentum into the opening minutes of the second quarter, scoring on back-to-back possessions to overtake the lead at 4-3. The teams were aggressive after the pair of goals, picking up an onslaught of fouls and free position chances. The Skyhawks were fortunate to see a free position shot by the Pack go high, followed by a big save from Basso to keep it a one-goal game.

Kiyokawa got Fort Lewis back on track with a ground ball that led to a successful clear. Moments later, junior Ellie Martinez would net a woman-up goal off the Dostie assist to see the score tied at fours. Dostie and Polk ended the quarter with goals to see a 6-4 advantage heading into the break.

The third quarter was a nail in the coffin, and it all started with a goal by Polk to extend the lead to three goals. The Skyhawks continued to pepper the keeper with shots, two of which found the back of the net to make it 9-4 with 10:14 on the clock. Martinez earned a caused turnover with eight minutes to go which led to another Abbadessa goal to reach double digits for Fort Lewis. The Pack finally broke through the defensive end with 7:18 remaining, but a pair of saves by Basso held the score at 10-4.

Delgado went on to score back-to-back goals, one of which was a free position goal to extend the lead to 13-4 with under three minutes to go. CSU Pueblo got one back with 90 seconds remaining in the quarter, but the Skyhawks saw a ground ball by Rodgers, followed by a Dostie goal to end the third in a 14-5 score.

Polk opened the fourth with another goal, this one coming after an opening draw control win by Kiyokawa to make it a 10-goal advantage. The teams traded goals from there as a Vanzant goal at the 3:47 mark had the lead sitting at 17-7. The Pack scored two down the stretch as Fort Lewis saw shots from freshman Marissa LaCivita and junior Alyssa Strough to close it out in a 17-9 final.
