Skyhawks host Grizzlies for Nike N7, senior day in final home series

DURANGO, Colo. – With just two weeks remaining and a chance at the conference tournament in sight, the Fort Lewis College softball team is set to host Adams State University for a pivotal four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series this Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the Skyhawks will debut its first-ever spring Nike N7 softball games and follow it up with senior day on Sunday.

Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. with Nike N7 pregame festivities to start around 11:40 a.m. On Sunday, the Skyhawks will honor two seniors – Sloan Shotton and Katie Pippel – at 10:40 a.m. prior to an 11:00 a.m. first pitch. All games including pregame festivities will be streamed live on the RMAC Network for free.

ABOUT NIKE N7
Since its creation in 2009, the Nike N7 Fund has awarded more than $7.5 million in grants to 259 Native American and Aboriginal communities and organizations, reaching more than 500,000 youths. The N7 Fund supports organizations that provide sports and physical activity programming to youth in these communities.

This year's Nike N7 Games mark the first time that Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse will participate in a sponsored contest. It is the fifth time overall that Fort Lewis College has been selected as one of only 11 institutions nationwide — Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts, Gonzaga, Florida State, Marquette, University of New Mexico, San Diego State, Stanford, Haskell Indian Nations, Mesa Community College, and Fort Lewis College — to participate in the games which have regularly been participated in by the basketball programs.

Fort Lewis softball has six players who are tribal members: Ashley Burriel (Navajo), Cara Daugherty (Choctaw), Catheryn Rodman (Muscogee Creek Nation), Isabelle Livreri  ( Navajo), Sloan Shotton (Otoe-Missouria, Iowa, Kiowa, Wichita, Cheyanne, and Caddo), and Labraida Tenorio (Acoma Pueblo and Santo Domingo Pueblo).

LAST TIME OUT
Fort Lewis (20-21, 18-16 RMAC) is back at home on Aspen Field this week after a 3-1 series loss to New Mexico Highlands University on the road. It was an offensive slugfest in Las Vegas, N.M., as the Cowgirls found the advantage 34-33 in total hits. Outscored across the series 24-14, the Skyhawks were able to keep pace with NMHU in total hits, but 23 runners left on base across the series left much to be desired for FLC. Shotton was Fort Lewis' lead bat in the lone 9-6 win of the series, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and two runs batted in. With a single, double, and triple in the contest, Shotton finished just a home run shy of the cycle.

SCOUTING THE GRIZZLIES
Adams State returns to Durango, Colo., for the second-straight season for a bout with the Skyhawks. The Grizzlies, standing at 9-34 overall and 6-26 in RMAC play, lead the all-time series in dominating fashion 104-49, but Fort Lewis boasts a 9-7 advantage over the last four series. Riding an eight-game losing streak after back-to-back series losses to Chadron State College (20-23, 18-18 RMAC) and Colorado School of Mines (22-21, 21-13 RMAC), the Grizzlies will be looking for an upset on the road.

Headlining the Adams State lineup is catcher and shortstop, Breck Smith. Smith, a junior from Grand Junction, Colo., leads the roster with a .386 batting average, 44 hits, and 31 RBIs. Additionally, Smith leads the Grizzlies with 15 doubles and is tied for the lead with six home runs. In the circle, Jasmine Garbiso boasts the Grizzlies best record at 3-7. The junior out of Pueblo, Colo., has thrown just two complete games and compiled an 11.78 earned run average through 73.1 innings of work and 28 appearances.

INTO THE COUGARS DEN
Next weekend Fort Lewis will close out its regular season in hostile territory, challenging 9th-ranked Colorado Christian University on the road in a four-game tilt. The nationally ranked Cougars are currently 45-3 overall, riding an 11-game winning streak, and have dropped just a single conference game all season. Games are slated for Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 28-29, at All Star Park.
