Skyhawks score early, fall by 19-5 final to No. 7 Rangers

DENVER – After a hot start for the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team, No. 7 Regis University went on to score 12 unanswered goals to run away with a 19-5 win on their home turf.

Fort Lewis fell to 3-9 overall and 3-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play while Regis improved to 15-1 overall and 9-1 in conference play to secure home-field advantage for the conference tournament.

The Skyhawks were outshot 40-11 for the night, including a 31-9 difference in shots on goal. Fort Lewis committed 22 turnovers versus 16 for Regis.

Juniors Haley Dostie and Ellie Martinez each scored two goals and came away with four draw controls in the effort while junior Nina Polk added the team's fifth goal. Sophomore Diamond Velasco and freshman Zoi Delgado had one assist apiece.

Freshman Samantha Rodgers led the team with three ground balls to go along with a caused turnover. Senior JoJo Lutz followed with two ground balls and one caused turnover. Senior Rebecca Kiyokawa recorded a pair of caused turnovers to lead the way. Senior goalkeeper Averi Basso played 45 minutes and earned 11 saves—head seventh double-digit saves outing of the season.

The Rangers netted the game's first goal just 35 seconds into play, recovering from a shot that went wide and scoring on the second attempt to go up by one. The Skyhawks tied it up at the 11:40 mark with Dostie's 42nd goal of the season, coming after a Regis turnover that the team converted for the score to see things at one all. Turnover plagued both sides over the ensuing minutes of play. The Rangers saw their first free position opportunity at the nine-minute mark, but tough defense and a blocked shot held the game in a tied score.

Basso went on to secure back-to-back saves, followed by a ground ball by Lutz to give Fort Lewis possession. Dostie said no more to the tied score with 6:42 remaining, corralling a pass from Velasco at the top of the circle for a scoring snipe to put her team ahead 2-1. Basso continued to shine with another pair of saves on shots just nine seconds apart, but the Rangers eventually broke through to knot it at 2-2 with under four minutes on the clock.

Fort Lewis followed with its first draw win of the evening, and Martinez capitalized with her 14th of the season to make it a 3-2 game. The aggressive style of play by both teams benefited the Rangers on the following pair of possessions as the home team scored a pair of free positions to take a 4-3 lead. Kiyokawa caused a turnover, followed by a ground ball by senior Autumn Rymerson as the first quarter ended. The Skyhawks were outshot 12-3 in the first quarter but scored goals on each of their three shots.

Much like the start of the first quarter, the Rangers quickly netted their sixth of the night to double up the lead 19 seconds into the second quarter. Regis added another at the 12:43 clip after running away with a caused turnover to make it 7-3. Things continued to go right for the home team as their scoring streak extended to seven straight, forcing a timeout with the score sitting at 9-3.

The scoring woes continued for Fort Lewis as the score drifted to 11-3 with 6:24 remaining and the Skyhawks tallying just one shot on goal through the quarter. Fort Lewis appeared to have a favorable chance, going woman-up after a yellow card was issued to a Regis player, but a pair of turnovers limited the damage and held the score. Regis scored one more but saves by Basso limited the damage with the score at 12-3 at the half.

Regis open the third quarter with a pair of goals before Martinez snapped the Skyhawks' scoreless skid with her second goal of the night to make it 14-4 with nine minutes to go. Freshman Sydney Tannaci held down her defensive position on the ensuing play for the Rangers, coming away with her second caused turnover to establish a career-high. The defensive presence paid off as the Rangers were held without another goal until the 3:26 mark, making it 15-4. Basso ended the quarter with two saves, bringing her total to 11 as the game moved into its final 15 minutes.

The Rangers added another two goals to begin the fourth quarter before a Fort Lewis goal by Polk made it a 17-5 game with 10 minutes remaining. Regis got it back at the 2:16 mark with its 18th goal of the outing to reclaim a 13-goal advantage. The home squad ended to contest with a free position goal to claim a 19-5 win on Friday evening.
