Skyhawks fall twice in season finale against No. 9 Colorado Christian

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College softball team concluded its 2023 campaign Saturday afternoon after dropping its final two games of the season, 4-3 and 12-0, to ninth-ranked Colorado Christian University. The Skyhawks close out the season with a 23-26 overall record and a 21-21 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

The Cougars advance to 52-4 overall, 42-2 in conference play, and will look ahead to hosting the RMAC Tournament next weekend. Fort Lewis finished with an even or better conference for the fourth-straight season.

"Our season ended early which is a bummer," head coach Dwight Sanders shared. "I'm still so proud of this group and all that they've accomplished. It is an honor to show up every day and grind with this talented group of young ladies. We played extremely well this weekend and throughout the season. We're a young team and to see this kind of success so early, we're putting ourselves in a strong position for years to come."

The Skyhawks graduate two seniors, Sloan Shotton, and Katie Pippel.

GAME ONE – COLORADO CHRISTIAN 4, FORT LEWIS 3
After a dazzling game one performance yesterday, Amiee Shanks (16-8) and Kali Crandall (27-2) toed the rubber to square off once more and the second bout proved just as exciting. Neither side would concede an inch, forcing zeros across the board through the first five frames.

The Cougars finally struck in the sixth, scoring a pair on a two-run home run off the bat of Savannah Tourville following a walk to Kenzie Middleton. Fort Lewis erupted in the final frame for the second-straight day, pushing across three runs to put Colorado Christian on its heels 3-2. Alex Tenorio and Cara Daugherty each provided clutch singles to drive a single run while an error forced by Izzy Giroux would score the final run.

A pinch-hit double for Samaria Roope brought in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh, and an inning later a triple from Tourville scored Kenzie Middleton for the walk-off victory. Shanks allowed the four runs, three of which were earned, on six hits and four walks. The seventh inning was the only frame in which Shanks allowed more than one base hit. Crandall earned the win, her third of the series, after not allowing an earned run and sacrificing just four hits and one walk.

GAME TWO – COLORADO CHRISTIAN 12, FORT LEWIS 0
It was all Colorado Christian in the final outing of the season as the ninth-ranked Cougars exploded for 14 total hits in the contest including a 10-run third inning. Caydee Farnworth (4-11) took the circle for the Skyhawks and downed the Cougars in order through her first frame.

Colorado Christian's Abrie Castillo (19-2) stood in the path of Fort Lewis, holding the Skyhawks to only four hits in the game and five base runners due to an error by her third basemen. The Cougars struck for just two runs in the second inning, scoring the pair on a double from Miki Berg. In the third, Colorado Christian posted 10 hits in the frame including two doubles and two triples for the 10 CCU runs.

Castillo picked up the win while Roope and Alexis Hamilton each made relief appearances in their final regular season games for the Cougars. Farnworth was dealt the loss after being chased out following 2.1 innings of work and giving up seven earned runs on six hits.
