Sturtevant led all Skyhawks at RJGA Palm Valley Classic

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – In the final scheduled tournament ahead of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships, Brooke Sturtevant was the lead Skyhawk notching a tie for 40th as the Fort Lewis College women's golf team tied for 18th at the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association Palm Valley Classic over the weekend.
 
Co-hosted by the RJGA and Western New Mexico University, the tournament was held at the Palm Valley Golf Club. Designed by Arthur Hills, the course features 6,005 yards of championship golf with a par of 72. 
 
West Texas A&M University and Colorado Christian University tied for the team title with totals of 586 (+10), but after a two-hole playoff West Texas took home the trophy outshooting Colorado Christian -1 to +2. Oklahoma Christian University's Sofia Benavides won the individual title as the only competitor to break par with 143 (-1) total.
 
Fort Lewis tied for 18th with the University of Hawai'i Hilo finishing 57 strokes above par as a unit with a final total of 633.
 
ROUND ONE – 318 +30
The opening round proved the toughest for the Skyhawks as Sturtevant led the pack with a +3-finish totaling 75 on the scorecard and ending the afternoon in a 13-way tie for 19th. While landing an eagle on hole seven to complement five birdies, Sturtevant also tallied a batch of bogeys to finish above par. Emilia Manntz landed the only other eagle of the afternoon for FLC on hole 17.
 
ROUND TWO – 315 +27
Kendal Gutierrez carded the best single-round score among the Skyhawks across the final 18, finishing with a 77 (+5) thanks to a trio of bogeys with a triple bogey as well to offset a single birdie. Sturtevant finished a stroke behind Gutierrez (78, +6) in the final round, notching four bogeys, a birdie, and a double bogey. Emma Tornroos was the only Skyhawk to tally two or more birdies in the final round.
 
POSTSEASON AWAITS
Fort Lewis will now turn its eyes ahead to the RMAC Championships from Apr. 23-25. The tournament will take place at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.
