Trio of Skyhawks tabbed with CSC Academic All-District honors

DURANGO, Colo. – Amiee Shanks, Cara Daugherty, and Catheryn Rodman, members of the Fort Lewis College softball team, have been recognized for their achievements both on the field and in the classroom. The trio has been named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District teams, a program that recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on and off the field.

"Academic All-District awards are outstanding for our student-athletes," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Dwight Sanders said. "I believe it embodies what we are trying to build in this program. Excellence on and off the field is what we always preach, so to see them taking care of business in the classroom first is a testament to what we're building here and the dedication these student-athletes have."

All three Skyhawks have earned their first Academic All-District awards.

Shanks, a sophomore from Tucson, Ariz., leads the trio after garnering First Team Academic All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors just a few weeks ago. In the classroom, Shanks holds a 3.97 GPA with her studies focused on Exercise Physiology. On the diamond, Shanks earned All-RMAC Honorable Mention after leading the Skyhawks in the circle with a 16-8 record across 162.2 innings pitched. All told, Shanks tossed 17 complete games, two shutouts, earned the Skyhawks only save of the season, and boasted a 3.44 earned run average.

In the field, Daugherty was the Skyhawks most reliable glove all season. Daugherty, a junior from Aztec, New Mexico, was near-perfect in the outfield. Racking up 54 putouts and two outfield assists, Daugherty committed just a single error all season for a .982 fielding percentage. An Environmental Studies major with a Geographic Information Systems Certificate, Daugherty has compiled a 3.82 GPA and holds two Academic All-RMAC Honor Roll awards.

Rodman, the Skyhawks leader in runs batted in and home runs, earns her first award after being one of the hottest bats in the Fort Lewis lineup. A junior from Tulsa, Okla., Rodman finished first on the team in RBIs (35), first in home runs (9), first in hit-by-pitches (8), third in total hits (43), and second in total bases (81). In the classroom, Rodman boasts a 3.53 GPA while studying Nutrition.
