Six Skyhawks capture All-Conference Honorable Mention

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Six members of the Fort Lewis College softball team were awarded All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Honorable Mention honors, the conference office announced Wednesday morning.
 
The five Skyhawks to earn All-Conference Honorable Mention include Alex Tenorio, Alyssa Gutierrez, Sloan Shotton, Amiee Shanks, Kayla Stone, and Catheryn Rodman.

"I'm really proud of our group this year," Fort Lewis College Head Coach Dwight Sanders shared. "We believe that these are a big award. It means several coaches thought they were key players throughout the year and we'd certainly agree. It was a great year for these girls, a great year for the team, and we're excited to move forward and prepare for next year." 
 
Tenorio captured her second-straight All-Conference Honorable Mention award. Tenorio, a sophomore from Albuquerque, N.M., led the Skyhawks and started all 49 games at shortstop. Boasting a team-leading batting average of .377, Tenorio also added 11 doubles, eight home runs, 33 runs batted in, and 15 stolen bases. In the field, Tenorio owned a .910 fielding percentage with 70 putouts and 131 assists.
 
A freshman from Castle Rock, Colo., Gutierrez burst onto the scene this season and led Fort Lewis with 19 stolen bases: the second-most through a single season in program history. Gutierrez batted an efficient .322, leading the Skyhawks with four triples while adding three doubles and five RBIs. A staple in center field, Gutierrez tallied a .942 fielding percentage with 72 putouts and 25 assists.
 
Shotton, the Skyhawks wall behind the plate, also captured her first all-conference honor. Shotton, one of two graduating seniors for Fort Lewis, was the rosters leading scorer with 36 runs scored this season. At the plate, Shotton supplied an additional .276 average with eight doubles, two triples, and five home runs. Behind the dish, Shotton boasts a .977 fielding percentage with 185 putouts, 23 assists, and caught six runners stealing.
 
Shanks, Fort Lewis' ace in the circle, is the only pitcher on staff to earn All-Conference honors. Shanks, a sophomore from Tucson, Ariz., finished her 2023 campaign with a 16-8 record across 34 appearances, 21 starts, and 162.2 innings pitched. Shanks finished the regular season with a 4.43 earned run average and 60 strikeouts. Additionally, Shanks tallied the Skyhawks' lone save of the season alongside 17 complete games.
 
Stone, a recent transfer from Monterey Peninsula College, enjoyed a quality first season with the Skyhawks. Seeing time at second and third base, Stone was one of the Skyhawks best on defense at the plate. Stone tied Shotton for third on the roster with 29 RBIs while adding eight doubles and five home runs with her slugging power. On the diamond, Stone owns a .977 fielding percentage after making 69 putouts with 93 assists. 

Rodman, the second member of the Skyhawks outfield trio, was the final Skyhawk tabbed with conference honors. Rodman was one of Fort Lewis' most lethal hitters, boasting a .289 average with nine doubles, one triple, nine home runs, and a team-leading 35 RBIs. Rodman also led the Skyhawks with eight hit-by-pitches: twice as many as the next closest Skyhawk.
 
With the 2023 season in the books, Fort Lewis will enjoy its summer off before returning for fall practice in August.
