Women's soccer makes home debut against pair of LSC foes

DURANGO, Colo. – Boasting its best start to a season since 2013, the Fort Lewis College women's soccer team is poised to make its home debut this week against West Texas A&M University and Angelo State University.

Looking Back
The Skyhawks came away from another week on the road with a 3-0 win over Midwestern State University and a 1-1 tie against Chaminade University. In the win over Midwestern, Fort Lewis led in total shots 19-17 and shots on goal 10-5 while not taking a single corner kick to Midwestern State's three. Anika Scherer, Rylee Rustad, and Sabrina Reyes each scored goals and Elizabeth David and Aubrey Swindle were credited with assists.

In the tie with Chaminade, Fort Lewis totaled eight shots, three of which were on goal, compared to 11 shots for Chaminade. The Silverswords earned eight corner kicks versus four for the Skyhawks. The goal scorer was Hannah Paschke off an assist by David. The Skyhawks now have seven goals on the year from seven different players.

Scouting West Texas A&M
The Buffs are still in search of their first win this season, sitting at 0-0-2 overall. The team owns a pair of 1-1 ties to CSU Pueblo and Adams State to begin the year. In their home opener, the Buffs held a 1-0 halftime lead over the Grizzlies. Adams State found the equalizer with under 10 minutes to play, and the deadlock stood as time expired. Jasmine Gibson and Bailey Murray are the goal scorers so far while the duo of Reagan Matacale and Ashley Silvestre own assists.

Fort Lewis is 1-10 all-time against West Texas with the lone win coming in 1-0 fashion in 2010. The teams faced last season with the Buffs taking home a 3-0 result.

Scouting Angelo State
The Belles are 1-2-1 through four games this season with the win coming by way of a 4-0 final versus East Central. Last week, Angelo dropped a 4-0 result to Colorado School of Mines and a 1-0 contest to MSU Denver. Abby James leads the team with two goals and two assists, followed by five players who have one goal. Mia Czamecki has two assists to her credit.

Fort Lewis is 2-5-1 all-time against Angelo with the most recent win coming in a double overtime game in 2013. The Skyhawks fell by a score of 1-0 in last season's meeting.

Around the RMAC
The league is represented on the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll by Mines propelled to No. 2 with a 3-0-1 overall record. Colorado Mesa rose to No. 17 with a 3-0-0 record. As the teams look ahead to league play, Mesa sits in first place and is followed by Mines. Fort Lewis sits in third with a pair of nonconference matches yet to be played.

Mesa leads the conference in goals per game (4.00) and goals allowed per game (.33). Fort Lewis ranks third in goals allowed per game (.75). Five players from the conference have three goals this season and two players have been credited with three assists. Riley Bravin ranks third in the conference in goals against average (.771).

Statistical Leaders
Fort Lewis is off to a promising start in 2023, averaging 1.75 goals per game compared to a mark of less than one goal per game last season. The Skyhawks are also holding their opponents to an impressive average of .75 goals per game. Seven players have scored goals this season, including three that have been scored by freshmen. Swindle and David are leading the way with two assists apiece. Katlyn Rosenbaum and Bravin have split time at goalkeeper and combine for a .75 goals-against average. Bravin has faced 23 shots and owns a pair of wins for Fort Lewis.

Up Next
Fort Lewis will head right into Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with a game against CSU Pueblo on Thursday, September 21. The Skyhawks are 24-19-6 all-time against the Pack but lost the most recent pair of meetings. Last season, Fort Lewis fell by a 1-0 final after CSU Pueblo scored the eventual game-winner in the 33rd minute.

This season, the Pack is 1-1-2 with a win over Newman. The team fell by a 1-0 final in its most recent outing against Cal State San Bernardino.
