Poston’s fifth overall finish guides Fort Lewis to third at Farmers Insurance Sam Proal Invite

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College men's golf team went off this week to claim third place overall at the Farmers Insurance Sam Proal Invitational at Walking Stick Golf Course on the Colorado State University Pueblo campus.
 
"I think our guys did extremely well, they are starting to come into their own," Fort Lewis College Head Golf Coach Jim Foltz said. "I'm really proud of them for the third-place finish. I think the men are knocking on the door for a win very soon."
 
Henry Poston led the Skyhawks this week, placing fifth overall with a five-under tournament score of 211 to finish under par for the first time in a collegiate tournament. Following suit, three other Skyhawks placed in the top-20, with Nicholas Krantz ending in a tie for seventh carding a 215 (-1), while Ronald Kildall III tied for 14th shooting a 218 (+2), and Carson Kerr grabbed a tie for 17th with a 219 (+3). Jake Chesler rounded out the men's team shooting 224 (+8) and tying for 27th. CSU Pueblo's Colt Tenpenny shot a 202 (-14) on his home course to win the tournament.
 
As a team, FLC shot an 861 (-3) outpacing Hutchinson Community College by 14 strokes. The ThunderWolves took advantage of their home course and nabbed first place with an 829 (-35).
 
Inside the Scorecard
Fort Lewis had a bit of a slow start to the week; the team shot a combined 297 (+9) and 288 (E) on days one and two to find themselves nine over par. Able to turn it around on day three, the Skyhawks went deep and finished with a 276 (-12). Additionally, the Skyhawks led all teams with 161 pars for the week, finished second in eagles with two, and made 50 birdies.
 
Poston led the Skyhawks in the opening round, finishing one over thanks to a pair of birdies on holes five and thirteen. Kerr and Krantz were neck and neck to open the tournament, each shooting two over.  
 
Chesler went one-under in the second round while Poston and Kerr finished close behind with even pars at 72. Krantz and Kildall III were able to finish just a single stroke over par to put the Skyhawks in a strong position before the final round.
 
Fort Lewis' closing round was the best bringing the overall total to an impressive 276 (-12). Poston lit up his final round, shooting six under (66) thanks to an eagle, four birdies, and thirteen pars. Krantz bounced back to finish four under (68), draining five birdies and making a single bogie, while Kildall III carded in a score of three under (69) with five birdies and a pair of bogies. All together the Skyhawks landed one eagle and 16 birdies in the final round.
 
Looking Ahead
Next up on the docket for the Fort Lewis men's golf team is the Ruidoso Junior Golf Association South Central Shootout from Sep. 25-26. The tournament will be held at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort Championship Golf Course in Mescalero, New Mexico., hosted by Western New Mexico University.
